Gary Kubiak Reportedly Talked With Johnny Manziel About Joining Broncos
ESPN’s Adam Schefter has reported that Denver Broncos’ head coach Gary Kubiak had a conversation with free agent quarterback Johnny Manziel about Manziel joining the defending Super Bowl Champions.
Kubiak And Manziel Reportedly Met To Discuss The QB Joining Denver
Schefter also said that the team has no immediate plans to sign the embattled quarterback and want to wait until his legal issues and likely NFL discipline is resolved. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport noted that the discussion between Kubiak and Manziel occurred “a month ago.”
Manziel was released by the Cleveland Browns on March 11 after being drafted 22nd overall in the 2014 NFL Draft out of Texas A&M, where he won the Heisman Trophy in 2012.

Appearing in 14 games through his first two seasons, Manziel has not produced anywhere near the level of a first rounder. Through his two seasons, he has thrown for 1,675 yards, 7 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions while completing 57% of his pass attempts. On the ground he has ran for 259 yards, averaging 5.6 yards per carry and has rushed for one touchdown.
Unfortunately for both the Browns and the NFL, Johnny Football — being a high profile player — has brought a lot of negative attention for his legal issues off the field. On February 4, 2015 the quarterback checked himself into an alcoholic rehabilitation center, and then on May 30, he threw a water bottle at a fan who was heckling him for an autograph, although the bottle did not hit the heckler and no charges were filed.
The problems don’t stop there, he was pulled over in October of 2015 for fighting with his then girlfriend and admitted to have been drinking in the afternoon. On November 24, Manziel was benched and named third string after a video of him partying surfaced on the internet, Manziel had previously lied about the video and was named the Browns’ starter just a week prior.
Manziel’s troubles continued on January 2, 2016, when he was reportedly seen at a Las Vegas casino the night before Cleveland’s final game of the season. The day of the game, the quarterback did not check in with the team’s doctors. It was later reported that he wanted to play for the Dallas Cowboys.
Just four days later, Manziel’s marketing agency, LRMR dropped him from their brand and then his agent Erik Burkhardt announced he was no longer representing Manziel on February 5. This came on the heels of the Dallas Police Department re-opening a criminal investigation of Manziel after claims of domestic violence by his ex-girlfriend Colleen Crowley. Crowley said that Manziel forced her into a car, pulled her hair, and threatened to kill both of them.
