Lopes’ last job in baseball was as a first base coach for the Washington Nationals in 2016 and 2017.  After 2017, he announced his retirement from baseball. He largely left the public eye. The Dodgers were not aware of Lopes having Parkinson’s disease until his wife Lin called them to inform them of her husband’s death. He died in a hospital in his hometown of East Providence, Rhode Island.

He made his MLB debut with the Dodgers in 1972 at the age of 27. 1975 was arguably his best season, when he had a National League-leading 77 stolen bases. Despite this, he wouldn’t make his first All-Star team until 1978.

After the 1982 season, he was traded to the Oakland Athletics. He also played for the Chicago Cubs and Houston Astros before retiring in 1987.

Just one season after his retirement, Lopes was hired by the Texas Rangers as a bench coach. In the 1999-00 offseason, the Milwaukee Brewers hired him as their manager. The 2000 Brewers only had one All-Star, closer Bob Wickman, who was traded away at the trade deadline.

Lopes was fired 15 games into the 2002 season. Interim manager Jerry Royster went 53-94 to finish the season.

After being fired by the Brewers, he rejoined the San Diego Padres as a first base coach. He coached the Nationals, Philadelphia Phillies, Dodgers and the Nationals again before his retirement. He won his second World Series with the Phillies in 2008.

Currently, there is no player wearing Lopes’ No. 15 for the Dodgers.
