Former New York Rangers player Ron Duguay has received a stage IV colon cancer diagnosis.

His daughters have set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds for Duguay. They asked for $26,000.

Duguay received this diagnosis a year ago. The cancer has spread up his body, causing him to lose his appendix and gallbladder.

The appendix is an essentially useless organ. The gallbladder releases bile to aid in digestion. The liver is able to produce bile in the absence of a gallbladder. However, some patients are forced to make dietary changes due to a harder time digesting.

Duguay is currently undergoing several forms of treatment, including therapies, supplements and alternative medicine. Even for a successful hockey player, these costs quickly add up.

Duguay was drafted with the No. 13 pick in the 1977 NHL Draft by the Rangers. He also played for the Detroit Red Wings, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Los Angeles Kings. After his NHL career, he played for several smaller professional leagues.

After his playing career, he became a broadcaster. He was an analyst at MSG Network for the Rangers games from 2007 to 2018. He also appeared on an MSG program Hockey Night Live! several times. His contract was not renewed after the 2018 season.

Duguay is also currently dating Sarah Palin. Palin was the governor of Alaska and the vice presidential pick for the campaign of John McCain in 2008.

The GoFundMe campaign for Duguay has currently raised about $66,000. Due to increased medical costs, Duguay’s family is now asking for $100,000.

“Our dad has never been someone who asks for help,” the sisters said, “especially when it comes to money. He has always tried to handle everything on his own and didn’t want to burden anyone else with what he’s going through.”
