Mo Williams
Mo Williams played 13 seasons in the NBA for seven different teams, winning a championship with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016. The 37-year-old Williams has a new title now – on Tuesday, he was named the head coach of Alabama State’s men’s basketball team.
Williams, who played his college career at the University of Alabama, has spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Cal State University Northridge. In a statement released by Alabama State, Williams says that he is excited about the opportunity. “It’s a great day to be a Hornet,” he said. “I am extremely excited to become part of the family, and I am looking forward to the challenge. Go Hornets!”
The excitement seems to be mutual as Alabama State athletic director Jennifer Lynne says that the university is eager to see what Williams can do for their program. “We are excited about the direction of our men’s basketball program as we moved forward into this new era. Mo Williams checked the boxes that we were looking for in the next head coach of Alabama State men’s basketball, and his passion and leadership speak volumes. He is no stranger to the South, having played high school basketball in Mississippi and college basketball in Alabama.”
Williams was the SEC Freshman of the year at Alabama in 2002. He also averaged 13.2 points per game, 4.9 assists per game and 2.8 rebounds per game during his NBA career, which included being named an All-Star in 2009 and winning a championship in 2016.
