Floyd Mayweather has long been touting a match against UFC fighter Conor McGregor, but it’s not the only sports-related ambition the retired boxer has.

Floyd Mayweather plans to buy an NBA Team

The undefeated legend posted a picture of himself and Magic Johnson on Instagram on Thursday, and revealed why exactly he was meeting with the former Los Angeles Lakers guard and current president of the team’s basketball operations: because Mayweather hopes to acquire an NBA team.

“Just had a great meeting with Magic Johnson,” Mayweather wrote in the caption. “It’s about time for me to buy an NBA team, if you’re ready to sell your NBA team, please get in touch with me.”

This is not the first time the former boxer has bragged about something on social media. Just earlier this week, Mayweather shared a picture of himself on Instagram sitting on a plane with four giant stacks of cash amounting to $400,000 in winnings he earned from betting on Isaiah Thomas and the Boston Celtics to defeat the Washington Wizards in Game 2 of the second round of the NBA playoffs on Tuesday night, which they did.

As of January, Mayweather’s net worth was believed to be around $340 million, per Forbes. This may seem like a lot of money, although there are some issues with the 40-year-old’s plan to own a basketball franchise.

First, there are no NBA teams currently up for sale. Then, there is his flaunting of wager earnings like the ones shown above that Commissioner Adam Silver and other top officials in the league may not approve of. Third, Mayweather has a history of domestic violence toward women.

One of the biggest problems with the former boxer’s plan, however, is that his net worth does not even remotely approach the average market value for an NBA team. In fact, the last professional basketball team to be sold were the Atlanta Hawks, who were bought for $850 million in 2015 — and most NBA teams have sold for much higher than that.


Mayweather previously expressed an interest in purchasing the Los Angeles Clippers in 2014, though Microsoft executive Steve Ballmer eventually bought the team for $2 billion.

As for Mayweather’s long-rumored bout against McGregor, promoter Oscar De La Hoya stated Wednesday he doubts the fight will actually occur.

“Will we see that fight? I strongly feel we won’t,” De La Hoya told CBS Sports.

UFC president Dana White, however, said during an appearance on Conan O’Brien’s show on April 9 that he believed the bout would be held.
