Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) President Sepp Blatter, who was charged by the Swiss Attorney General’s office for mismanagement and misappropriation in September, has been suspended for the next 90 days. Along with this suspension of Blatter is secretary general Jerome Valcke and vice-president Michel Platini. Acting president will be Issa Hayatou, who heads the African football confederation.
These suspensions come at a time when FIFA has been criminally investigated for the past months, with several current and former FIFA officials being indicted in June for bribery and money laundering. In lieu of this, Blatter stated that new elections would be started for a new FIFA president and that he would resign as president but stay in the post until an extraordinary FIFA congress would elect his successor. In late June, he renounced his remarks on the resignation and that he put his mandate in the hands of the extraordinary congress.
More will come out of this investigation, including the supposed money laundering given to Platini by Blatter in the coming months. Major FIFA sponsors like Coca-Cola, McDonalds, and Visa have called for Blatter’s official resignation.
