Drew Brees “Passes Torch” To Zion Williamson With Gift Jersey

“Passing the torch to you,” read a Drew Brees signed jersey that found its way to a certain first–overall NBA pick who you just may have heard of once or twice upon his arrival in New Orleans this week. That pick, Zion Williamson, appears ready to inherit the keys and take the car out for spin, at least as far as the former Super Bowl MVP can judge.

After spending his career’s initial stages as a San Diego Charger before joining the Saints, Brees ruled the New Orleans sporting scene for countless years, delivering the city’s first and only championship title across all major sports venues. Brees also broke NFL records for most career passing yards and completions while wearing the gold and black, attributing to his already loaded first ballot Hall Of Fame resumé.

Despite Brees’ confidence, Zion humbly responded to the gesture stating, “Wow, passing the torch. Am I ready to take that on? The city of New Orleans.”

Zion just completed a stellar year as a Duke Blue Devil, putting up 22.2 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game. Williamson also illustrated unseen athleticism throughout the entire season with constant highlight reel-worthy dunks and blocked shots. Williamson led the Blue Devils to an ACC Championship and won the ACC Tournament MVP. Now a New Orleans Pelican, Zion adds to a young and promising core recently assembled after the Anthony Davis trade to the Los Angeles Lakers, joining other talents such as Brandon Ingram and Lonzo Ball.

As Brees enters his career’s closing years,  Zion just days ago joined the NBA as perhaps the league’s most exciting prospect since LeBron James. With this respectful gesture, Brees now seems to have picked the perfect candidate to wield the torch once he calls it a career.
