Derrick Rose To Undergo Knee Surgery, Possibly Out For Rest of Season

In a horrific twist of fate, Derrick Rose will undergo another knee surgery. After only playing in 95 games over the last three seasons, it appears that the Bulls superstar was beginning to feel a bit of discomfort in his right knee. Later an MRI confirmed that he indeed re-tore the meniscus; he originally tore it after only playing ten games in the 2013-14 season and also missed the 2012-13 after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament of his left knee.

This is simply another blow to the Chicago Bulls franchise, who has struggled in the postseason with the absence of Rose — a team obviously built around the still young star. And while he was not back to his 2010-11 MVP form, he was at least getting into a rhythm, averaging 18.4 PPG and 5 APG in 46 games in 2014-15; he even dropped 30 points and seven assists against Cleveland in the game prior to the All-Star break.

Still, the team has not made it clear when Rose injured his knee and have not given a timetable for his return: it is a possibility that they could rest him for the remainder of the season, in hopes that he returns to his former self. But how much longer can they honestly wait: in the next two seasons, they owe him over $41 million and have paid him over $51 million for only 95 games in the last three seasons.

Is it reasonable to ask how much longer could the Bulls wait before cutting their losses: or more importantly, how much more can Derrick Rose’s knees take? Yes, Russell Westbrook has bounced back from three meniscus tears, but Rose has only shown flashes of his MVP genius.

So, at the moment, the only thing the Bulls fans/organization could do is simply sit, wait and pray that this will be Rose’s last injury; if not, 2016-17 might be the last time he puts on the coveted Chicago Bulls jersey.

On a bit of a brighter note, there has been an outpouring of support for Rose through social media.
