Denver Broncos Linebacker Jonathon Cooper Apologizes After Being Arrested Twice For Strangling His Girlfriend

Denver Broncos linebacker Jonathon Cooper is facing serious legal trouble after being arrested twice in one week in connection with a domestic violence investigation, creating one of the biggest NFL offseason storylines.

Cooper was arrested on June 4 in Colorado following an alleged altercation with his girlfriend. Early reports indicated he was booked on misdemeanor domestic violence and criminal charges after police responded to a dispute at his residence.

The situation escalated this week when prosecutors upgraded the charges. According to court records, Cooper now faces a felony charge of second-degree assault by strangulation, along with a misdemeanor third-degree assault charge. Investigators allege physical violence resulted in injuries to the woman involved.

Court documents and multiple reports indicated Cooper allegedly admitted during questioning that he grabbed the woman’s neck aggressively during the confrontation. Both parties have provided different accounts of what happened.

The Broncos quickly released a statement addressing the matter. Head coach Sean Payton acknowledged speaking with Cooper, but emphasized that the legal process and the NFL investigation will determine what happens next.

If Cooper is suspended for a few games or half the season, the timing is significant because he was a key contributor for Denver. The former Ohio State standout had eight sacks during the 2025 season and signed a four-year, $60 million contract extension in 2024. He’s one of the Broncos’ key pieces on defense, especially as a pass rusher.

Cooper has pleaded not guilty to these charges and has also apologized for the situation on social media. His attorney has requested an expedited trial, but court hearings are scheduled throughout July, with proceedings expected to continue during training camp.
