Daniil Medvedev Destroys His Racket In Epic Meltdown After Failing To Win Single Game In Monte-Carlo Masters Match

Tennis player Daniil Medvedev had a meltdown during the Monte-Carlo Masters.

Medvedev had a brutal day. He failed to win a single game across two sets, losing 6-0 in both. In tennis, this is known as a “double bagel.”

Medvedev was obviously frustrated with his poor performance. He slammed his racket on the ground seven times before breaking it and throwing it in the trash.

An unsportsmanlike conduct code violation was called. Medvedev will likely be fined for his outburst.

Medvedev is the No. 10 tennis player in the world. A day like this for him is uncommon. Although he’s from Russia, he currently does not represent a country due to Russia being banned from many athletic events after the invasion of Ukraine. 

Meanwhile, his opponent, Matteo Berrettini of Italy, had one of the best days of his career. Berrettini was the No. 90 tennis player heading into the match. Although this is still respectable, he was a clear underdog against Medvedev.

Berrettini was the fifth player to defeat a top-10 player in a double bagel. The Association of Tennis Professionals first started making rankings in 1973.

This was Berrettini’s first double bagel win at the tour level. Berrettini immediately realized the historic nature of his performance. 

“I think it was definitely one of the best performances of my life,” Berrettini said afterward in his on-court interview. “I think I missed three shots in the whole match, and it’s not easy against a tricky player like Daniil. I think the game plan was perfect and my weapons were working pretty well.”

This win advanced Berrettini to the round of 16 in the Monte-Carlo Masters. He defeated Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain in the round of 64.

The round-of-16 match will be on April 9 at 5 a.m. EDT.
