Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman David Irving appears to have quit the NFL so he can smoke pot. On Thursday night, he took to Instagram to go off on the NFL’s drug policy, one of the strictest in professional sports.
Irving is currently suspended indefinitely for violating that policy and has been adamant in his support for the substance. During the video, he appears to be smoking a joint.
“Basically guys, I quit,” Irving said. “There’s a lot of s–t f—-d up with the league.”

Irving also pointed out that while the NFL has no problem dishing out pain pills during an opioid epidemic, they shun the use of marijuana in treating pain and mental illnesses. Irving said that he saw this while in training facilities and that he would prefer to treat injuries and ADHD by smoking.
“If I’m going to be addicted to something, I’d rather it be marijuana, which is medical,” Irving continued. “I do not consider it a drug, rather than the Xanax bars or the hydro or the Seroquel and all that crazy s–t that they feed you. Like I said, it ain’t about smoking weed.
“How many NBA players you see get in trouble about this? How many coaches you see get in trouble about this? How many baseball players get in trouble? UFC players getting in trouble? How many actors?”
After going undrafted out of Iowa State, Irving was signed to the practice squad by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2015. That September, the Cowboys signed him to their 53 man roster and resigned him to one-year deals each of the last two offseasons.
When he was available on the field, he proved to be a force. In two years, he racked up eight sacks, 12 quarterback hits, and 26 tackles. On top of that, he deflected six passes in 2017 alone, including setting up a game-sealing interception.
But he was often plagued by issues. He started each of the last two years with a four-game suspension for violating substance policies. Last Friday, Irving received a third suspension for violating league policy and was suspended indefinitely.
“I love football, don’t get me wrong,” he said of quitting. “However, I don’t love the NFL.”
