The Washington Commanders made a statement at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine.

The Commanders have finalized a trade to bring Deebo Samuel to Washington, sending a fifth-round pick to the San Francisco 49ers.

On Super Bowl Sunday, Samuel revealed to Adam Schefter his latest trade request, expressing his desire to move on. 49ers general manager John Lynch later stated at the scouting combine that they would accommodate his wishes.

Samuel, set to earn $21.7 million in 2025, will reunite with Commanders general manager Adam Peters, who worked in the 49ers’ front office for seven seasons. The Niners selected Samuel with the 36th pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

The trade will become official once the new league year begins on Mar. 12.

Samuel was a versatile weapon for the 49ers in head coach Kyle Shanahan’s offense. He is the first and only wide receiver in NFL history to record 20 or more rushing and receiving touchdowns. Over his first six seasons, he totaled 4,792 receiving yards and 1,143 rushing yards. In the last four years alone, he has put up 958 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns while hauling in 244 receptions for 3,599 yards and 18 scores.

In 2022, after a stellar 2021 season that earned him Pro Bowl and All-Pro recognition, Samuel sought a trade but later agreed to an extension with the team. Trade rumors surrounded him and Brandon Aiyuk last offseason. This year, the 49ers have opted to move Samuel.

San Francisco will take on a $31,550,012 dead cap hit this year. Samuel, entering the last year of his contract, will account for $17.5 million against the Commanders’ salary cap. Washington could decide to extend his contract.

Samuel appeared in 15 games in 2024, finishing with just 51 receptions, his fewest in any season with 13 or more games. He tallied 670 receiving yards, three receiving touchdowns and added 42 rush attempts for 136 yards and one rushing touchdown.
