College Football Heisman Watch After Week 7: Top Five Contenders

Following Week seven of the college football season, it is time to update the watch-list for the Heisman Trophy, which features just five of the best players in college football.

  1. Justin Fields (QB) – Ohio State

So far through six games, Fields has posted an astounding TD-INT ratio of 18-1. The Buckeyes’ signal-caller has been dominant so far by picking apart opponents’ defenses. Fields is also poised for a big game next week, as Ohio State takes on Northwestern.

  1. Jonathan Taylor (RB) – Wisconsin

Although some claim that Taylor’s Heisman stock fell as a result of two weekends ago, the truth is it is the first time he has been held under 100 yards on the season. Taylor rushed for 80 yards in No. 6 Wisconsin’s 38-0 thrashing of Michigan State on Saturday. That being said, he still contributed two touchdowns in the win and has absolutely terrorized opposing defenses this season.

  1. Jalen Hurts (QB) – Oklahoma

After leading the Sooners to victory in the Red River Shootout, Hurts has cemented a place near the top of this list. He finished as the leading passer and rusher in that game and came through with three touchdowns through the air. Hurts also added 131 yards and a touchdown on the ground; the only blemishes to the game were his two red-zone turnovers. Hurts alone accounted for 70.5% of his team’s points, a recurring theme for this Oklahoma team throughout their season. The Sooners have been heavily leaning on their consummate leader.

  1. Tua Tagovailoa (QB) – Alabama

The quarterback of the perennially top-ranked team in college football would usually earn a spot on this list anyway. However, Tagovailoa has certainly earned his way on it so far. In his most recent game against Texas A&M, the southpaw shredded the Aggies’ defense for 293 yards and four touchdowns. Tagovailoa also threw his first interception of the season in the game, but it can be argued that does not diminish from the dominating performance he has put forth up to this point in the season.

  1. Joe Burrow (QB) – Louisiana State University

Burrow has proved himself to be one of college football’s top quarterbacks this season after the Tigers’ takedown of the Florida Gators. Burrow put up incredible numbers against a tough defense: 21-for-24 passing, good for 293 yards and three touchdowns. He currently owns the highest completion percentage of any FBS quarterback at 79.3%, a figure that makes him a likely candidate for the Heisman Trophy.
