McCaffrey comes from a family of many other football players. His older brother Max McCaffrey played wide receiver at Duke and is projected to be a late-round NFL draft pick this year. His youngest brother Luke is also a high school quarterback. Their father Ed played as a wide receiver at Stanford and then for 13 seasons in the NFL for several teams, including the New York Giants, the San Francisco 49ers, and the Denver Broncos. He was also a Pro Bowl Finalist in 1998 and a three-time Super Bowl Champion.

McCaffrey is the highest-ranked quarterback Michigan has landed since Ryan Mallett, No. 12 overall, in the 2007 class.
