The Kansas City Chiefs have released running back Damien Williams from the team.
The Chiefs made the decision as it looks like the team is committing to the youth they have at the position. Last season, the Chiefs drafted Clyde Edwards-Helaire in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Edwards-Helaire became the team’s new starting running back and played in 13 games last season. The rookie recorded 808 rushing yards, four rushing touchdowns, 297 receiving yards, and one receiving touchdown. The young 21-year-old finished the season leading the team in rushing.
Williams joined the Chiefs in 2018 as a free agent and became one of the important pieces of their eventual Super Bowl win. In their 2019 Super Bowl season, Williams led the team in rushing and recorded over 100 yards in the Super Bowl. Additionally, the veteran running back scored two touchdowns in the team’s Super Bowl win. The first touchdown was a 5-yard touchdown catch and the second was a 38-yard run for the final score of the game.
Williams opted out of the 2020 season. He is probably talented enough to land on another team. Time will tell which franchise will want to sign the talented back who is one year removed from the NFL.
