The Chicago White Sox are in last place in the AL Central, and 17½ games back from a wild-card spot in the American League.

Chicago finished the 2024 season with a 41-121 record, the worst in the MLB. The White Sox became the second team in modern MLB history to lose 120 games, joining the 1962 New York Mets.

In the offseason, the White Sox signed a handful of veterans in an effort to field a more competitive roster.

Chicago signed starting pitcher Martin Perez, third baseman Josh Rojas, right fielder Mike Tauchman and outfielder Michael A. Taylor.

Perez appeared to be a great signing, but in only four games, he went on the injured list with a left flexor strain. He most recently had a rehab start on August 3 in Triple-A.

The White Sox also traded ace Garrett Crochet to the Boston Red Sox for four prospects.

This season, Chicago’s offense has been one of the worst in baseball, led by Lenyn Sosa, Chase Meridroth and Kyle Teel, who was called up to the big leagues in early June.

The White Sox have the second-worst batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage in baseball. Chicago is also in the bottom five for home runs and RBIs.

Chicago’s pitching has also struggled this season, led by Aaron Civale and Davis Martin.

Chicago is in the bottom three for strikeouts, and the bottom 10 for batting average allowed, walks and hits per inning pitched (WHIP). The White Sox are also in the bottom half of the league for ERA, but are in the top half of the league for preventing home runs.

At the trade deadline, Chicago traded starting pitcher Adrian Houser to the Tampa Bay Rays and left fielder Austin Slater to the New York Yankees.

Houser was the most consistent pitcher for the White Sox this season, with an ERA of 2.54 and a WHIP of 1.29.

Despite being one of the worst teams in baseball this season, Chicago already has more wins than it did in the previous season, which is a step in the right direction.

The White Sox won’t be contending this season, but if the organization can develop talent and continue to acquire prospects, Chicago could be a contender down the road.
