Chicago Cubs Add Playoff Experience, Landing Kevin Gausman From Blue Jays

The Chicago Cubs bolstered their pitching staff Sunday night, acquiring right-hander Kevin Gausman from the Toronto Blue Jays in a deal aimed at shoring up a rotation that’s been battered by injuries this season.

Chicago sent Triple-A outfielder Brett Bateman and Class-A infielder Ty Southisene to Toronto in exchange for the 35-year-old veteran, with the Cubs also absorbing the remainder of Gausman’s $23 million salary for the year. The move addresses a need that’s dogged Chicago for weeks, as the club has been connected to nearly every available arm on the trade market amid a wave of rotation injuries that left the front office searching for reinforcements ahead of the deadline.

Gausman brings a mixed regular-season line into his new clubhouse — he’s 5-10 with a 4.38 ERA and 127 strikeouts this year — but his postseason résumé is what made him attractive to a Cubs team with October ambitions. Across 14 career playoff starts, Gausman has posted a 3.83 ERA, and he was a driving force behind Toronto’s run to the 2025 World Series, going 2-3 with a 2.93 ERA over six starts that October. That track record positions him as a ready-made option for Chicago’s rotation down the stretch and into any postseason run, regardless of how his volume numbers have looked during the regular season.

For Toronto, the trade signals a step back from immediate postseason aspirations as the pending free agent’s expiring contract made him a natural trade chip. The Blue Jays used the return to continue reshaping their farm system, adding a pair of prospects in Bateman and Southisene while also separately acquiring infielder Jose Soriano in moves connected to their broader roster shakeup around the deadline.

Analysts were largely bullish on the trade from Chicago’s perspective, with at least one outlet grading the return as an “A” for the Cubs given the relatively modest prospect cost required to land a pitcher with Gausman’s playoff pedigree. The addition gives Chicago another established arm to lean on as the club pushes for a deeper postseason run than it managed a year ago.
