The Buffalo Bills decided to replace struggling quarterback Tyrod Taylor with rookie Nathan Peterman in Sunday’s game against the Chargers in Los Angeles, and it didn’t turn out to be a smart plan.
Peterman tossed five interceptions out of 14 pass attempts in the first half and was thus benched at the break.
The defense of the Chargers — who won the game 54-24 to go 4-6 — later said they felt slightly offended by Bills (5-5) coach Sean McDermott’s decision to start Peterman, a fifth-round pick out of Pittsburgh.

“I’m pretty sure we might’ve felt a little disrespected,” cornerback Casey Hayward told the San Diego Union Tribune. “We’ve got two really good pass rushers, probably the top tandem in the NFL. We’ve got really good corners. …We’ve got really good safeties. They do it against us? “Trippin’.”
Hayward had two picks on Sunday. Los Angeles led 37-7 by the time Taylor stepped in to replace Peterman.
McDermott, however, said he has no remorse over his choice.
“It wasn’t what he or we hoped for, but young players experience things like this,” McDermott said following the loss, per the team’s site. “I don’t regret my decision. I regret the result. … This is in part about winning now and in part about winning in the future.”
McDermott added that he would evaluate this week who will start under center next Sunday against Kansas City.
Peterman acknowledged his mediocre performance:
Peterman is just one of four quarterbacks to be picked off five times in a half since 1991.
