The San Diego Chargers have agreed to the terms of a deal to hold on to tight end Antonio Gates, according to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter has stated that the deal is a two-year agreement, and that it will allow Gates to finish his career in San Diego. The Chargers, who went 4-12 last season, signed Gates as an undrafted free agent in 2003. Over the course of his 13-year tenure with the team, Gates has recorded 10,644 receiving yards and 104 touchdowns in 190 games. The team has also signed Cleveland Browns wide receiver Travis Benjamin to a four-year deal worth $24 million with $13 million in guaranteed money, according to ESPN and media reports. Gates missed four games at the start of last season because of a suspension, and another contest due to an MCL knee sprain. He had 56 receptions and five touchdowns last season. Gates is also the all-time leader for the Chargers in receptions (844), receiving yards (10,644) and touchdown catches.
