Canucks Defenseman Dan Hamhuis Out Indefinitely With Facial Fracture

The Vancouver Canucks might have beaten the New York Rangers on Wednesday night, but they paid the price. Veteran defenseman Dan Hamhuis took a shot from Dan Boyle to the jaw in the third period; he briefly stayed down on the ice before skating to the bench with blood trailing behind him.

After the game, Canucks head coach Willie Desjardins couldn’t comment on the defenseman’s exact injury, but knew it was a serious one. “It’s scary,” he said. “It’s a hard thing to take. He’ll suffer with that for a little while.”

Hamhuis left the arena on a stretcher and was taken to the hospital. The team confirmed that he has a facial fracture and will undergo surgery on Friday. There is no timeline for his recovery yet, but similar injuries have kept players out for at least a month.
