Can Drew Petzing Help Detroit Lions Revamp Its Offensive Line?

After a disappointing season following Ben Johnson’s departure, Dan Campbell and the Detroit Lions are bringing in experienced offensive coordinator Drew Petzing from the Arizona Cardinals.

Petzing has had stints with the Minnesota Vikings (2014-2019) and the Cleveland Browns (2020-2022), where he served as a tight ends and quarterbacks coach under Kevin Stefanski. Petzing then became the offensive coordinator for the Cardinals under Jonathan Gannon, who has now been fired by the organization.

Petzing and the Cardinals’ offense struggled this past season, as they had quarterback Kyler Murray for only five games, relying on backup Jacoby Brissett. The Cardinals did have multiple players put up career years, including wide receiver Michael Wilson and tight end Trey McBride.

Petzing joins a star-studded offense including Jahmyr Gibbs, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Sam Laporta, David Montgomery and Jared Goff. The Lions do need to revamp their offensive line, which, aside from All-Pro tackle Penei Sewell, struggled with inconsistencies and failed to protect Goff.

The Lions’ offense struggled to find consistency throughout the year, switching playcallers in the middle of the season from John Morton to Campbell.

The Lions offense went from 0.15 epa/play in 2024 to just 0.7 epa/play in 2025. A significant drop-off for an offense that has a wealth of talent. Petzing will look to get the offense back to the levels it was at with former offensive coordinator Johnson.
