Buccaneers’ Receiver Chris Godwin Relinquishes No. 12 Jersey To Tom Brady

Following speculation over whether Tom Brady would suit up in his usual No. 12 jersey that he’s donned for 20 years, the Buccaneers’ announced Tuesday that Pro Bowl receiver Chris Godwin would be switching from 12 to 14 relinquishing his number to Brady. Godwin told the Buccaneers’ website that his decision didn’t include any compensation or favors from Brady in exchange for the number.

“Obviously if he doesn’t want it, or if he’s not making a big deal out of it, I’m definitely going to keep it. We’ll see how that goes,” Godwin said earlier in March during a video interview with the Bucs’ website. “I think just out of respect for what he’s done, what he’s accomplished, just kind of the career he’s built for himself, you have to lean into that respect.”

Godwin posted a picture of himself wearing No. 14 besides Brady on Tuesday.

Brady later commented on the post, “Much Appreciated – Very Grateful – Humbled And ready to get to work !!!”

Prior to the number switch, Godwin reiterated his respect for Brady in an interview with Complex Sports on Monday.  “I know everybody likes to say you gotta get something. But, for me, it’s more like a respect thing,” Godwin said.  “I have a lot of respect for Tom and what he’s done in this league. Talking to him, briefly, he seems like he’s a really down-to-earth dude. I’m not the type to go looking for something. If he wants the number, then I’ll defer that to him.”

Godwin is coming his off his third year in the league and his first Pro Bowl selection in 2019 after compiling career-highs in three categories including 86 receptions, 1,333 receiving yards and nine touchdowns.
