Bryn Forbes’ 3-Pointers Lead Spartans To 81-62 Win Over Buckeyes

Michigan State Senior Guard Bryn Forbes made six of seven three-pointers in the second half to lead the sixth-ranked Spartans to an 81-62 road victory over the Ohio State Buckeyes on Tuesday night, their third straight win and seventh in eight games.

Forbes had 27 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the field and hit 7 of 10 3-point attempts. He also scored 20 points in the second half. And yet, Forbes said he felt he had an ‘Ok’ game, in which he could have done more.

“I could have made a couple more shots,” the Senior Spartan said.

The Spartans (23-5, 10-5 Big Ten) led 36-31 at halftime against an undermanned Ohio State (18-11, 10-6), which saw its four-game winning streak cut short.

“Trust me, that was not a very good performance by us,” Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said, clearly disappointed. “It was a very good performance by (Ohio State).”

Denzel Valentine added 17 points and eight assists, most to Forbes, for the Spartans.

The Buckeyes received news on Tuesday that sophomore forward Jae’Sean Tate will miss the remainder of the season due to a left shoulder injury, for which he will have surgery on Friday.

Tate leads the Buckeyes in conference scoring (11.9). Overall, he averages 11.7 points and 6.4 rebounds. He has started 44 straight games.

“Jae’Sean is the heart and soul of this basketball team,” Ohio State coach Thad Matta said. “We challenged our guys, man down you’ve got to man up. I hate it for Jae’Sean but that being said, we have to go on and find a way to regroup and get ready to go again.”

Seven of the Spartans’ last nine games have been decided by four or less points. Michigan State will host Ohio State on March 5 to end the regular season.

The Buckeyes have won at least 10 Big Ten regular season games in the past 11 seasons, the longest streak in school history.

The Spartans will next host Penn State on Sunday, while Ohio State will host No. 8 Iowa on Sunday.
