Broncos’ Star Jonathon Cooper Excused From Minicamp After Arrest For Choking His Girlfriend

Jonathon Cooper has been excused from the Broncos minicamp as he continues to deal with legal issues. The Denver Broncos made headlines this week by excusing standout linebacker Cooper from mandatory minicamp as he faces a legal situation that leaves his future with the team uncertain.

Broncos coach Sean Payton confirmed Tuesday that Cooper would not participate in minicamp, saying the veteran is taking time to focus on a personal matter. The organization continues to gather information and is working with both the NFL and local authorities.

Payton said Cooper needs to handle the situation himself. The decision comes after Cooper was arrested twice in roughly one week. The first arrest occurred on June 4 following a domestic dispute investigation in Colorado. More serious charges were later filed, including second-degree assault by strangulation and misdemeanor assault. Cooper was arrested again on June 11 for violating a protection order and harassment-related charges.

Cooper has pleaded not guilty to these accusations, and his legal team is preparing for court proceedings scheduled through July, with a trial expected to begin shortly before Broncos training camp opens this summer.

On the field, Cooper has been one of the Broncos’ most productive defenders, recording eight sacks over the past three seasons and helping form one of the AFC’s strongest pass-rushing units. His absence during minicamp provides an opportunity for younger players, such as Q. Robinson, to get valuable reps.

For now, Cooper remains away from the team. The Broncos have not made any short- or long-term decisions, but his status for the start of training camp and the 2026 season remains a major question for the organization.
