Braves Add Bullpen Depth in Brent Suter Trade, Cap Busy Deadline

The Atlanta Braves acquired veteran left-handed reliever Brent Suter from the Los Angeles Angels on Monday, sending minor league infielder Nacho Alvarez Jr. to Los Angeles in a move aimed at shoring up the bullpen for the NL East-leading club.

Suter, 36, went 1-2 with a 4.12 ERA across 63⅓ innings in 41 appearances for the Angels this season, and pitched at least two innings in 18 of those outings, giving the Braves a durable, multi-inning option out of the bullpen as the club looks toward a postseason run. In exchange, Atlanta parted with Alvarez, who was hitting .236 with two home runs and 21 RBIs over 37 games at Triple-A Gwinnett this season. Alvarez debuted in the majors with the Braves in 2024 and appeared in 58 games at the big-league level in 2025, batting .234 with two homers and 15 RBIs.

The Suter deal capped a busy stretch of trade deadline activity for Atlanta. Over the preceding days, the Braves also acquired right-hander Tyler Mahle from the San Francisco Giants and added outfielder Lane Thomas along with left-hander Bailey Falter in a trade with the Kansas City Royals. To make room on the roster for the incoming players, the club traded away catcher Joey Bart and outfielder Eli White, clearing space for Sean Murphy and Thomas.

The flurry of moves comes as the Braves have been forced to navigate a rash of pitching injuries that have thinned their rotation. Spencer Strider, Spencer Schwellenbach and Hurston Waldrep have all been sidelined at various points, with reliever Reynaldo López the most recent addition to that list. Despite adding multiple arms at the deadline, the team is still searching for a true frontline starter capable of anchoring a deep playoff run, with the Mahle acquisition viewed as adding rotation depth rather than a singular difference-maker.

Braves president of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos addressed the club’s deadline approach with reporters Sunday, acknowledging the uncertainty inherent in the process. He said the front office would ultimately find out relatively quickly whether the acquisitions worked out, for better or worse, but that decisions had to be made in real time regardless of how they might look in hindsight.

With the moves now finalized, Atlanta heads into the stretch run with a deeper bullpen, added rotation depth, and a reshuffled position-player group, as the club looks to build on its NL East lead and put together a serious postseason push.
