Bears GM Discusses Failed Matt Judon Trade Amid Falcons Acquisition
The Chicago Bears’ attempt to acquire star pass rusher Matt Judon from the New England Patriots came up short. The Atlanta Falcons ended up getting the four-time Pro Bowler.
Bears General Manager Ryan Poles recently discussed the failed trade.
The Bears and the Falcons presented identical offers to the Patriots, each proposing a third-round pick for Judon, but the Falcons were willing to trade for Judon without a new contract in place.
In an interview on HBO’s Hard Knocks, Poles said, “Our language is basically saying if the contract is not signed then he reverts back to New England. I don’t want to get the club in a position where we have a player that’s here, we’ve given up a draft pick, and we haven’t had a resolution on a contract.”

Poles’ decision reflects a growing issue within the league about trading for players seeking new contracts, which has generated problems for other teams.
Poles admitted the disappointment of missing out on Judon, acknowledging the potential impact he could have made. “If he has 20 sacks or something, yeah, it’ll make me sick,“ Poles said.
Judon’s choice to join the Falcons was influenced by the team’s competitive position in the NFC South, a division with fluctuating fortunes each year. The Bears face competition in the NFC North from teams like the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers, who each won playoff games last season.
The Falcons’ attempts to acquire Judon follow their previous unsuccessful attempts to secure other key defensive players, including Montez Sweat and UCLA edge rusher Laiatu Latu.
With Judon and quarterback Kirk Cousins, who is also returning from an injury, the Falcons are hopeful for a successful season and a potential playoff return for the first time since 2016.
