LOS ANGELES, CA - NOVEMBER 01: Alex Bregman #2, Marwin Gonzalez #9, Carlos Correa #1, and Jose Altuve #27 of the Houston Astros celebrate defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-1 in game seven to win the 2017 World Series at Dodger Stadium on November 1, 2017 in Los Angeles, California.
While the MLB restart has not been the smoothest operation that has ever been executed in sports, the Houston Astros have had a particularly rocky start – they are only behind the two teams which have had major COVID-19 outbreaks – the St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Marlins. During the previous offseason, a cheating scandal broke around the Astros that revealed details of the team using cameras and other tech to steal pitching signs and alert their batters as to what pitch was coming. Baseball is not a sport that forgives and forgets easily, and after MLB commissioner Rob Manfred decided to go easy on them, a few players have decided to inflict some vigilante justice. Most notably Dodgers relief pitcher Joe Kelly and A’s batter Ramon Laureano have gotten into bench-clearing scuffles with Houston.
This seemed to have thrown off Houston’s game – the team has gotten off to a clunky 14-10 start but the adversity seems to keep coming. Now, Astros’ star third baseman Alex Bregman has injured his hamstring during Wednesday’s night’s game against the Colorado Rockies. “I felt it when I was running down the line to first base, right about when I was going to make the turn to second,” Bregman said. “Disappointed. I want to be out there every day, playing with my guys. I was starting to feel pretty damn good. Think right now just go with it day to day and see how it feels [on Thursday]. I’ll get it evaluated, day to day, and see what happens. Who knows, maybe I’ll be playing here pretty soon.”
Bregman is officially listed as day-to-day, but with this shortened season almost halfway done, there is a very small window of error.
