Alabamas’ Devonta Smith Wins Heisman Trophy

Alabama wide receiver Devonta Smith took home the Heisman Trophy Tuesday night. Smith became just the third Heisman winner to come from Alabama since 2009.

Smith became the first wide receiver to win the coveted trophy since Michigan’s Desmond Howard won in 1991. Finalists for the trophy included, Trevor Lawrence who came in second, Alabama teammate Mac Jones came in third, and Florida’s Kyle Trask came in fourth. Coincidentally, the finalists were all quarterbacks.

The Heisman winner had an impressive season. The wide receiver recorded 1,641 yards, 20 touchdowns on 105 receptions. In addition, he scored from rushing and as a punt returner totalling 22 touchdowns. The wide receiver leads the country in catches, yards receiving, receiving touchdowns and all-purpose yards.

Following the announcement of his win, he gave an inspiring speech for others. In his speech, he said, “To all the kids out there that’s not the biggest, not the strongest, just keep pushing because I’m not the biggest. He added on talking about those who doubted him, I’ve been doubted a lot just because of my size. Really, it just comes down to if you put your mind to it, you can do it, no job is too big.’
