After Fan Storms Court For Selfie With Wembanyama, Calls For More Security Grow Louder

A fan stormed onto the court during Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Thursday, creating an unexpected interruption in the matchup between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs.

The incident occurred during the third quarter in San Antonio, when a spectator jumped over a courtside barrier and sprinted onto the court without security noticing. He tried to take a selfie with Victor Wembanyama before security personnel intervened, removing him from the court and the arena.

The fan is now banned from all NBA events and games. Players from both teams appeared surprised. The fan attempted to take selfies with Wembanyama and Knicks center Mitchell Robinson, who looked confused. Officials temporarily stopped play for several minutes before allowing the game to continue.​

After conferring with the announcers, officials decided that a jump ball was needed because the fan had interrupted the action. The incident became one of the most talked-about moments of the night on social media. Security personnel pursued the individual and eventually escorted them off the floor.

The fan could face trespassing charges, and arena management is not pleased with the incident. While these types of fan invasions are rare in basketball, security incidents involving spectators entering the playing surface do occasionally occur during big games.
