After Blue Jays Give Him 14-Year, $500M Deal, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Finally Feels The Love

Toronto Blue Jays All-Star first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has signed a 14-year, $500 million extension.

The no-deferral deal keeps Guerrero as a Blue Jay for the rest of his career, one that has already seen three All-Star appearances, two All-MLB First Teams and a Golden Glove Award.

The Blue Jays had tried to sign Guerrero to a long-term extension for years but to no avail.

Guerrero, over the summer, reportedly turned down a $500 million deal with deferrals. It was important for Guerrero to feel wanted by the Blue Jays.

Finally, the deal is done.

The deal is the largest in Blue Jays history and the third-largest in MLB history, only behind Juan Soto’s 15-year, $756 million contract with the New York Mets and Shohei Ohtani’s 10-year, $700M deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Toronto had been in pursuit of Ohtani in 2023 and Soto in 2024. Finalizing the extension with Guerrero ensures they don’t go 0/3 on big names.

The Blue Jays now have the fifth-largest payroll in baseball at $243.3 million. Over the next couple of years, however, stars such as George Springer and Max Scherzer will watch their contracts expire, freeing up money.

The Blue Jays are currently 6-5 and sit atop the AL East. This season, Guerrero is batting .279 with four RBIs.
