Adam LaRoche has recently been one of the most talked-about players in Major League Baseball, especially following his retirement decision after the Chicago White Sox refused to let his 14-year-old son Drake hang out in the clubhouse during games and practices anymore.

Adam LaRoche Shares Experience Rescuing Sex Slaves

ESPN’s Tim Keown recently wrote a profile of LaRoche that will appear in ESPN The Magazine’s April 25th issue in which he discusses LaRoche’s retirement, but also details how both the former designated hitter and Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Blaine Boyer spent 10 days in November in Southeast Asian brothels.

According to Keown, LaRoche, 36, and Boyer, 34, wore hidden cameras while doing undercover work to help rescue underage sex slaves through a nonprofit organization called the Exodus Road. The pair attempted to determine the age of the girls, who were only known by the numbers pinned to their bikinis, and also tried to uncover who their bosses were.

“Something huge happened there for us,” Boyer says. “You can’t explain it. Can’t put your finger on it. If you make a wrong move, you’re getting tossed off a building. We were in deep, man, but that’s the way it needed to be done. Adam and I truly believe God brought us there and said, ‘This is what I have for you boys.’”

“I was sick,” he says. “I was thinking about my kids and then thinking about the hundreds of thousands of parents who are searching for their 12-year-old daughters.”

“What are we doing?” LaRoche asked Boyer as they waited for their plane back home, according to Keown. “We’re going back to play a game for the next eight months?”

LaRoche, who played in the majors for 12 years was named a board member for the organization just months before he announced his retirement.

It’s rare to hear of any athletes performing this type of undercover philanthropic work. Their actions are certainly admirable.
