Yesterday marked the 45th running of the TCS New York City Marathon with approximately a field of 50,000 runners took on the 26.2 mile course that runs through the five boroughs of New York City.

On the woman’s side, Kenyan-born Mary Keitany placed first with a final time clocking in at 2:24:25 and was 66 seconds ahead of Ethiopia’s Aselefech Mergia. Third place went to Tigist Tufa who finished at 2:25:50. At first, Portugal’s Sara Moreira held the lead for the better part of the first 18 miles. Eventually, Keitany and Tufa pulled away from the pack at 20 miles to lead the rest of the race before Mergia caught up before the last part of the race.

The men’s race saw Stanley Biwott winning the race clocking in 2:10:34 while his fellow countryman Geoffrey Kamworor finished just 14 seconds behind him. Third place went to Ethiopia’s Lelisa Desisa who ran the race in 2:12:10 with last year’s winner Wilson Kipsang coming in 35 seconds later for fourth place. In the beginning, a front pack of 14 runners had kept the opening pace going before only five runners were left leading through 20 miles. Biwott would make his final move to take the lead at the 24th mile and would go on to win his first NYC Marathon for his career.
