ESPN’s Ed Werder tweeted Thursday that veteran quarterback Tony Romo expects to soon be released by the Dallas Cowboys and hopes to play two to three more seasons in the NFL despite turning 37 this April.

Cris Carter on Cowboys Potentially Releasing Tony Romo

On Thursday’s episode of Undisputed, Cris Carter and Nick Wright discussed what would happen should Romo be granted his release. Carter said Cowboys owner Jerry Jones would be doing the veteran “a favor,” and called the possible move “family treatment.”

“It’s the best thing for Tony Romo. I believe that Jerry Jones is doing him a tremendous favor,” said Carter. “They have a great relationship, and you thought that potentially that might get in the way of Dak’s overall development because Jerry Jones might put him in the game toward the end of the season. Or, if he happened to stay on the roster, how does Dak deal with the pressure?

They could have kept him around and tried to get a mid-level [pick]. If you know you can’t get a first for him, and you can get a three to a five for him, Jerry’s doing him a favor and saying ‘I’m going to give you the best situation. I’m going to give you your unconditional release before free agency, and before the draft. So you can go out there and you can interview with teams, teams can give you a physical. It’s the best situation for Tony Romo.

It’s like he’s treating him… he’s giving [Romo] the family treatment.”

Wright, meanwhile, called Romo an “asset,” and said he would be “shocked” if the Cowboys decided to release him.

“I think Denver, or Houston, if they sign him become the co-favorites along with New England in the AFC. I think the teams are that good, and I think Romo is that good.”

Romo injured his back last preseason after taking a big hit from a Seattle Seahawks defenseman. The QB was forced to wear a neck brace, and was replaced by rookie Dak Prescott as starer. Prescott and running back Ezekiel Elliott, another first-year, helped lead Dallas to a 13-3 record this season, the best in the NFC.
