Raiders Set To Release Veteran QB Geno Smith – Where Will He Land?

The Geno Smith and the Las Vegas Raiders pairing is coming to an end as they are expected to release the veteran quarterback if they do not find a trade partner before the new league year begins on Wednesday.

If Smith is released, the Raiders will free up $8 million in cap space, but they will also have to take on $18.5 million of dead money.

Smith, 35, signed a two-year, $75 million contract extension after he was traded from the Seattle Seahawks for a third-round pick.

The Raiders hoped that pairing Smith with Pete Carroll would result in wins, but after finishing with the worst record in the league, the Raiders moved on from both after just one season.

Fernando Mendoza will almost certainly be the next quarterback for the Raiders as they hold the first pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, but what is next for Smith?

Smith will, without a doubt, be finding a new home, but it remains to be seen if he will get another shot at being a starting quarterback.

In 15 games last season, Smith threw for 19 touchdowns but also threw a league-high 17 interceptions. That was the most interceptions he has thrown in a season since his rookie season with the New York Jets, when he threw 21.

Smith hopes to find the magic he had with the Seahawks and bounce back to what he was before becoming a Raider.
