Gavin McKenna, Projected No. 1 Pick in NHL Draft, Charged With Assault, Faces Possible 20 Years In Prison

Penn State men’s hockey player Gavin McKenna has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault.

McKenna faces up to 20 years in prison. The incident happened after Penn State’s first outdoor game on Jan. 31 against Michigan State. After the game, McKenna and some friends and family went to a bar called Doggie’s Pub. This was where the alleged assault happened.

At this time, little is known about the person that McKenna allegedly assaulted. There’s also little revealed about the nature of the alleged assault, whether it was a full-on fight or something else. The only fact that State College Police have shared is that the alleged victim is 21 years old.

Penn State athletic spokesperson has yet to comment on the matter.

The alleged victim was taken to Mount Nittany Medical Center. Police observed swelling, dried blood and a missing tooth. The alleged victim was also in significant pain that made speaking difficult.

The alleged victim received surgery on Feb. 2 for his injuries. Police say that his jaw will be wired shut for two weeks. Wiring helps jaws and facial bones heal properly.

McKenna’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 11. His bail is $20,000. No dates have been announced after this.

College hockey season ends in mid-April. The 2026 NHL draft is scheduled for June 26. McKenna had previously been seen by draft experts as the expected first pick. McKenna had previously played in the Canadian Hockey League.

A 2024 NCAA decision allowed him to be eligible for college play. He was in his freshman season at Penn State. He could choose to stay with Penn State for another season if he wishes. He makes around $700,000 from name, image and likeness. His rookie contract in the NHL could be up to $1 million.
