Along with this celebration of his life, both presidential candidates President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden tweeted their memories of Clemente and celebrating his life. Trump wrote, “Today we join millions of baseball fans and Puerto Ricans in celebrating Roberto Clemente’s life and his immense contributions to baseball and equality. He was one of my all-time favorite players – Roberto had everything! #ClementeDay #Retire21.”
In his tweet, Biden added, “Roberto Clemente was an incredible baseball player. He was a barrier breaker and a humanitarian. As he rose to fame, he lifted the Black and Latino communities with him. I may be a Phillies fan, but I’m always proud to honor the legacy of #21.”
Clemente was a staple in the Latin American community and was known for his amazing charity work which is what he was doing when he died in that fateful plane crash, bringing relief supplies for an earthquake to Nicaragua.
