New York Mets third baseman David Wright underwent surgery on Thursday to repair a herniated disk in his neck, the team announced.

Dr. Robert Watkins performed the procedure in Marina del Rey, California. The decision for Wright to undergo surgery was made after weeks of tests, rest and anti-inflammatory injections.

The Mets did not give an approximate timetable for Wright’s possible return, but the 33-year-old captain is expected to miss a good part of the rest of this season, perhaps even all of it.

“As an organization, we’ve got to say it’s going to be quite a while,” manager Terry Collins said Thursday. “If it’s two months out, you’re still talking about September, where you can increase the roster anyway.”

The player explained in a statement that his “neck simply did not respond to any of the treatments of the past few weeks.” He says while it’s frustrating, he’s “determined to make a full recovery and get back on the field as soon as I can to help the Mets win.”

Watkins had already been treating Wright for chronic spinal stenosis in his lower back.

“After trying every way to get back on the field, I’ve come to realize that it’s best for me, my teammates and the organization to proceed with surgery at this time,” Wright also said in the statement.

Although the Mets didn’t explicitly say Wright would be out for the season due to the surgery, right-hander Noah Syndergaard seemed to believe he was, judging from the following tweet:

Another Mets player, center fielder Juan Lagares, will also miss some time. The 27-year-old Dominican was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Wednesday, with a sprained left thumb. Utility player Ty Kelly was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas.
