Yale Basketball Issues Statement Apologizing For Support Of Expelled Captain Jack Montague

The Yale men’s basketball team has issued a statement apologizing for showing public support of their expelled captain, Jack Montague.

Before the Bulldogs’ marquee matchup against Harvard on Feb. 26, they wore warmup shirts with Montague’s number, 4, and his nickname “Gucci” on the back of the shirts. Posters featuring the shirts have popped up on campus this week accompanied by the phrase “Yale men’s basketball, stop supporting a rapist.”

CNN reported that Montague was expelled due to findings in a school led search involving sexual misconduct

Montague withdrew from the school on Feb. 10 shortly after the team’s 83-52 win over Cornell on Feb. 6.  The senior guard was averaging 9.7 points, 2.5 rebounds, and three assists per game.

The statement, first published by Jezebel reads, “Yale Men’s Basketball fully supports a healthy, safe and respectful campus climate where all students can flourish. Our recent actions to show our support for one of our former teammates were not intended to suggest otherwise, but we understand that to many students they did. We apologize for the hurt we have caused and we look forward to learning and growing from these recent incidents. As student representatives of Yale we hope to use our positions on and off the court in a way that can make everyone proud.”

Yale has been able to continue to play well despite the controversy, going 22-6, winning the Ivy League, and clinching it’s first NCAA Tournament berth since 1962.
