15-Year-Old Ida Wobker Disqualified From Wimbledon After Racket-Throwing Incident

German junior tennis player Ida Wobker, 15, was disqualified from Wimbledon‘s girls’ singles tournament after an angry racket throw sent the racket bouncing into the stands, the All England Club confirmed, according to ESPN and the Associated Press.

The incident happened toward the end of the second set of Wobker’s first-round match Saturday against Romanian opponent Maria Valentina Pop. Pop had dominated the opening set 6-0, but the match tightened in the second, reaching 5-5 before Wobker missed a backhand long and lost her composure. She flung her racket toward the court, and it bounced up into the first few rows of stands lining Court 11. It wasn’t immediately clear whether the racket struck any spectators, though the area was crowded.

Wobker immediately walked over to retrieve the racket and apologize, and officials paused play while tournament staff deliberated. After a lengthy delay, the chair umpire announced she’d been defaulted for unsportsmanlike conduct, handing Pop an automatic trip to the second round; Pop went on to lose that match to Daniella Britton. The International Tennis Federation’s rules explicitly bar players from violently or angrily hitting, kicking or throwing a racket during competition.

Wobker addressed the fallout that night on Instagram, writing “S— happens, you learn from it!”

The moment was a hard lesson in sportsmanship for the young player, who struggled with her game well before the outburst, committing 11 double faults and 44 unforced errors over the match. Despite the rocky performance, Wobker enters the incident already ranked 24th in the ITF’s junior world rankings, suggesting she has time to recover from the setback.

The disqualification added another talking point to an eventful Wimbledon fortnight, which also saw 43-year-old Serena Williams fall in her comeback match to 20-year-old Maya Joint after a four-year absence from the sport. Wobker’s exit means she won’t factor into the remainder of the girls’ singles draw, though her age and current ranking leave her with several more years of eligibility in the juniors before a potential move to the professional tour.
