Yankees Defeat Mets In Comeback, Pete Alonso Takes Responsibility

The New York Yankees defeated the New York Mets 8-2, coming back from down 2-0 in the eighth inning to steal the game.

The comeback was partially fueled by Mets first baseman Pete Alonso, who committed a massive error in the bottom of the eighth inning.

“I messed it up,” Alonso said. “I just made an awful throw. That whole inning, this game, it’s on me. After that throw the momentum got out of hand, and they had really good at-bats, and this one’s on me.”

Alonso fielded a ground ball hit by Jordan Vivas and looked to get the out at home as Jason Dominguez was heading toward the plate. Alonso sailed the ball over catcher Francisco Alvarez’s head, allowing the go-ahead run.

The error put the Yankees up 3-2, and from that point, the floodgates opened. Cody Bellinger hit a grand slam to right field to put the game out of reach.

The Mets sit at the top of the NL East, and Alonso is having a great statistical season, batting .301 with nine home runs.

However, this was a critical error from the four-time All-Star.

The Mets will try to shake off the series loss to the Yankees on Monday. They travel to Boston to start a series against the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox have lost five of their last six games.
