Los Angeles F.C.’s MLS debut may be several years away, but the club will definitely have stars in the boardroom even if they don’t have any on the field. On Thursday afternoon, they announced that comedian Will Ferrell will be a co-owner of the team going forward.
True to form, Ferrell deadpanned “This is not a joke.”
He will join an ownership group that already includes Magic Johnson, Nomar Garciaparra, Mia Hamm Garciaparra, Tony Robins and Tom Penn in addition to Cardiff F.C. owner Vincent Tan. The team should be active for the 2018 MLS season. Los Angeles is already home to one of the league’s most successful teams, the L.A Galaxy. Introducing LA F.C. will hopefully create a successful crosstown rivalry, similar to the East Coast’s New York Red Bulls and NYCFC. The club also unveiled its badge and color scheme on Thursday.
