Wichita State Coach Gregg Marshall Suspended After An Ejection In Canada

Wichita State men’s basketball coach Gregg Marshall was ejected from a game against McGill University in Montreal, Quebec on Tuesday. The Shockers were on a four-game basketball tour this summer to get some off-season runs with their northern neighbors. Marshall looked like a baseball manager in an umpire’s face the way he was yelling at the referees. His assistant coaches and Wichita players were trying to hold him back but he pushed them out of his way to get at the referees.

He continued to go on a tirade after the referees handed him two technical fouls and ejected him.

Marshall was complaining about physical play that resulted in one of his players getting a concussion. According to McGill Athletics website Marshall wanted his players to know he would stand up for them, he said. He felt McGill was beating his players up and his team was getting called for touch fouls.

“I knew that I was going to get (a second technical for disputing a call with the officials). I didn’t like the call and reacted,” said Marshall. “Once I reacted, I said that I may as well get my money’s worth… At some point, your players have to know that you’re going to stand up for them, that you’ve got some fight in you and they responded very well to my actions. So I appreciate them having my back as well… I wasn’t going to do anything physical but I wanted to make sure that (the officials) understood what I felt was happening was incorrect and wrong.”

Whatever he did seemed to have worked. The Shockers were down 56-60 and they went on a 21-11 run to finish the fourth quarter and take the game 77-71.

Wichita State interim Athletic Director Darron Boatright suspended Marshall for the last game of the tour.

The Shockers finished their Canadian tour 3-1, they beat IndiSport All-Stars 94-79 and UQAM 107-58 and lost to Carleton 100-75. Carleton University, in Ottawa, Ontario, has won the past 12 of 14 national championships in Canada.
