How often can you actually say that the Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes lost a shootout in an NFL game? The answer is not often but that is exactly what happened on Sunday giant the Las Vegas Raiders. In an AFC West matchup that the Chiefs have dominated in the past, it was Las Vegas that did the dominating on Sunday by jumping on the Chiefs from the start and never letting up. Although it ended up being 40-32, a one session game, it was never actually that close.
The NFL’s resident average quarterback Derek Carr had a great day completing 22 of 31 passes for three touchdowns and one interception, while Mahomes was relatively held in check. It feels like the Chiefs offense has not been as explosive this year with a noted shift to more running with rookie Clyde Edwards Helaire being their work-horse. This is likely October malaise that comes along with being as good as the Chiefs are, but it will be interesting to see if they turn it on and start laying the smackdown on inferior teams later in the year. On the other end, this is a huge divisional win for the Raiders who are now 3-2 and hope to make their first AFC playoff appearance for the first time in many years.
