Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden announced Kirk Cousins will start the 2015 season at quarterback, putting an end to questions about the team’s starting QB but adding more about Robert Griffin III’s future in Washington.
Gruden said the Redskins are now “Kirk’s team,” adding “this is about Kirk doing an excellent job and winning the job.” Cousins won the job over Griffin and Colt McCoy. Cousins has started 9 games in his three season career, but has gone 1-7 so far with Washington.
The move brought even more noise over the controversy swirling around RG3. Griffin has been sidelined with a concussion suffered during a preseason practice. Although Gruden has kept Griffin out citing the NFL’s concussion protocol, many league sources have reported a major rift between team officials and coaches and owner Dan Snyder over Griffin’s future with the team. Although Gruden said Griffin still has a place on the Redskins, it’s reported that the only thing keeping management from trading him away is Snyder’s reluctance to get rid of him.
There is still no timetable on Griffin’s return, but he could be soon heading to the trading block by the time the season starts next week. Washington wraps up the preseason on Thursday against the Jacksonville Jaguars and then face the Miami Dolphins in week one of the regular season. Unless the coaching staff changes their mind, Cousins will be the quarterback for the foreseeable future.
