University Of Arizona Halts Athletes Returning To Campus For Workouts Amid Spike In COVID-19 Positive Cases

As coronavirus cases surge in various states across the United States in recent weeks, some universities in those states have elected to forgo having their student athletes return to campus for workouts. One of those is the University of Arizona.

On Monday, the school announced that they would be pausing bringing athletes back to campus, something that they had been doing since June 15. Arizona Gov. Doug Duecy (R) ordered all gyms in the state to close on Monday, following the spike in cases. The university is awaiting as to whether or not they’ll be able to hold workouts with athletes currently on its campus.

In a prepared statement, University of Arizona athletic director Dave Heeke commented on the increase in coronavirus cases. “The health, safety and well-being of all members of our community is our number one priority. We will continue to work in conjunction with campus partners and our local government agencies to support and evaluate a safe and healthy return to campus.”
