U.S. Women’s Team Defeats Brazil 3-1 For Holiday And Chalupny’s Retirement

In a friendly match in women’s soccer, the U.S. women’s team faced off with Brazil in Orlando’s Citrus Bowl Sunday. First, the women’s team would go on to win 3-1 in the match against Brazil. Second, with famed striker Alex Morgan set to be the face of the new women’s expansion team Orlando Pride and present at the game yesterday, the crowd yesterday had a lot to be happy about.

Morgan scored the first goal for the U.S. in the ninth minute to set a 1-0 early lead until the end of the half when Brazil forward Marta sent a great pass to other forward Cristiane. This would lead to a goal past U.S. goalie Hope Solo to tie the game before the half ended. Crystal Dunn went right down to business in the 48th minute for a quick put-back shot to have the go-ahead goal. Newcomer Stephanie McCaffrey sealed the game for the U.S. when scoring the final goal during stoppage time.

The game also saw final games being played by defender Lori Chalupny and midfielder Lauren Holiday, who both started and were subbed out in the 20th minute and 56th minute, respectively. “I will remember how competitive we are. How much fun we’ve had and every funny thing that’s ever happened. This is bittersweet. There’s been a rush of emotions but it’s good to go out on a win,” said Holiday after the game.

The win yesterday marked the sixth match of the women’s World Cup victory tour and also extended the team’s 11-year home unbeaten streak to 102 matches. The U.S. will take on Trinidad and Tobago on Dec. 6 after a month’s hiatus.
