The Toronto Blue Jays will be returning to their temporary home in Buffalo, New York. The team announced it through a tweet on Wednesday afternoon. “Buffalo, we’re back,” the team wrote on Twitter. “We’ll see you June 1st.
Toronto has been unable to play back home at Rogers Centre because of the Canadian government restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Canadian government has not allowed the Blue Jays to play at home because of the risk of spreading COVID-19 due to the frequent travel required during a baseball season. Toronto last played in Rogers Centre on September 29, 2019.
Since then, Toronto has played the first two months of the season at TD Ballpark, and their spring training facility has been in Dunedin, Florida. During the shortened 2020 season, the team played their home games at Sahlen Field in Buffalo, New York. And now it looks like the team will continue to play home games at Sahlen Field until they are allowed back at Rogers Centre.
“The Blue Jays returning to Sahlen Field to once again temporarily play their home games is a testament to the great working relationship the Bison’s organization has with our Major League parent club,” said Mike Buczkowski, president of Rich Baseball Operations. “The only thing lacking from a successful MLB summer at Sahlen Field in 2020 was the ability to share that experience with our great fans. I know Buffalo is ready to get back to the ballpark and give the Blue Jays a ‘home-away-from-home’ field advantage that will propel them towards another postseason run.”

In the shortened 2020 season, fans were not allowed into stadiums, but this season approximately 4,300 fans can attend each game at Sahlen Field. Sahlen Field’s full capacity is listed at 16,600. Fan capacity could increase if everything goes right.
