Legendary Los Angeles Dodger broadcaster and announcer Vin Scully passed away on Tuesday night according to the team. The man which had captivated and entertained fans for over 67 years passed away in his home Tuesday night.

In a statement, Dodgers CEO Stan Kasten lamented the loss of the Hall of Famer. “We have lost an icon,” he said. “Vin Scully was one of the greatest voices in all of sports. He was a giant of a man, not only as a broadcaster but as a humanitarian. He loved people. He loved life. He loved baseball and the Dodgers. And he loved his family. His voice will always be heard and etched in all of our minds forever. I know he was looking forward to joining the love of his life, Sandi. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family during this very difficult time. Vin will be truly missed.”

Scully had been a stalwart in the Dodgers organization even in their Brooklyn days, being the longest-tenured broadcaster with a single team in pro-sports history. He had seen Dodgers legends in the past from Jackie Robinson in the 1950s and Sandy Koufax in the 1960s to future Dodgers legends such as Clayton Kershaw and Yasiel Puig.

Kershaw paid homage to the late Scully after Tuesday night’s matchup against the Giants. “He was the best there ever was,” Kershaw said. “Just when you think about the Dodgers, there’s a lot of history here and a lot of people that have come through. It’s just a storied franchise all the way around. But it almost starts with Vin, honestly. Just such a special man. I’m grateful and thankful I got to know him as well as I did.”

Scully’s last game was in October 2016 when he was honored after a 9-6 Dodgers victory over the San Fransisco Giants. “God has been so good to me to allow me to do what I’m doing,” Scully said before retiring. “A childhood dream that came to pass and then giving me 67 years to enjoy every minute of it. That’s a pretty large Thanksgiving Day for me.”

“I just want to be remembered as a good man, an honest man, and one who lived up to his own beliefs,” he said.

In addition to watching the team’s playoff games on TV, he appeared on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live on Thursday night. Scully called his last came on Oct. 2 in San Francisco.

“I went to the hardware store,” the legendary 88-year-old broadcaster said. “I have a very important engagement on Monday the 17th — I am lecturing at the sixth-grade school at St. Mel’s [in Woodland Hills]. I have a granddaughter and a grandson there. We have 16 grandchildren, so you know if I can’t think of something to do, someone out there will.”

Scully taped his interview with Kimmel hours before the Dodgers defeated the Washington Nationals 4-3 to clinch their National League Division Series in five games.

”I expect them to win,” he said.

Scully also discussed his early days broadcasting at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum after the Dodgers moved West from Brooklyn for the 1958 season. Fans carried transistor radios to follow the action described by Sully because they sat too far away from the field in the large stadium. After the team moved to Dodger Stadium, fans continued to bring radios to here him call games.

”I did put most of Southern California to sleep,” he joked. ”The transistor radio went under the pillow. I hear that my entire life now.”

Vin Scully’s broadcasting career came to an emotional end as he was honored in rival territory Sunday, exactly 80 years to the day when his love for the sport of baseball began.

Vin Scully Ends 67-Year Career As Dodgers Announcer, Calls Willie Mays ‘My Favorite Player’

It remains indisputably impressive that the legendary 88-year-old Los Angeles Dodgers announcer had a lot of stamina. How many people could keep track of a game while telling stories, recalling memories and simultaneously remind us that he did this job for a whopping 67 years? Odds are, not very many.

Strolling around his neighborhood in New York as a boy, Scully saw a World Series score written on a shop window. The New York Yankees defeated the The New York Giants (currently the San Francisco Giants) 18-4 in Game 2 of the World Series.

The young, Irish-Catholic boy thus decided to become a baseball fan and a Giants fan in particular that day: Oct. 2, 1936.

On Sunday, Scully signed off for the final time during the Giants’ 7-1 home victory over the Dodgers: “I have said enough for a lifetime, and for the last time, I wish you all a very pleasant good afternoon.”

It seems fitting that his final game was played between his favorite childhood team and the team he will be forever linked to.

The Giants secured a spot in the playoffs to begin an on-field celebration.

Exactly one week earlier, the Dodgers delivered a spectacular ending for Scully in his final call of a home game. Charlie Culberson’s walk-off home run ended that game, and the Dodgers celebrated their own playoff clinching.

Scully’s voice has long been described as soothing and melodic by many.

“His voice hits the ear in just the right spot,” announcer Joe Buck said during Fox’s pre-game show on Saturday.

Scully also had the chance to legendary Giants center fielder Willie Mays before Sunday’s game. He told Mays, “You’ve always been my favorite player, even though you wore the wrong uniform,” something which made the 85-year-old former outfielder chuckle.

Here is that heartwarming moment:

Before the fourth inning, Scully and Mays stood together for the unveiling of a plaque for Scully in the Giants’ press box at AT&T Park.

Taped messages of the famed announcer were shown. In one video, Scully spun the yarn of the shop window and explained how he became a Giants fan. The franchise’s fans erupted in cheers as if the team had actually scored.

“To see him up here and for him to get the adoration from Giants fans, they did a good job of acknowledging him and loving on him here at AT&T Park, and giving him the respect he deserves,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “It was going to be tough to beat last Sunday at home. That will be a high point. But for him to see the season out today, it’s a sad day but there should be rejoicing for sure. He’s had an amazing career.”

Inducted into the Hall of Fame back in 1982, Scully has called over 9,000 games. He has announced 20 no-hitters, and was there for five Dodgers championship seasons. He also called Don Larsen’s perfect game for the Yankees in the 1956 World Series and Sandy Koufax’s perfect game in 1965.

The beloved announcer was known for coming up with witty descriptions for players and their actions. For example, players didn’t make bad contact, they “sounded like they hit that one with the morning paper.” And a high-energy player “makes coffee nervous.”

Scully also had an uncanny ability for reading lips, having deciphered Madison Bumgarner’s “Don’t look at me” as recently as a week and a half ago.

One of his go-to statements as his career winded down: “I’ve always needed you more than you have needed me.”

Now, the Dodgers and MLB must move on. Joe Davis, not yet 30, joined the Dodgers’ booth this season to call road games.

The Dodgers, who finished the season with a record of 91-71,  will next visit the Washington Nationals on Friday for Game 1 of the National League Division series.

The Giants will visit the New York mets on Wednesday for for the Wild Card round game.

Vin Scully is now in his final week calling games at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, and after a 67-year career as the MLB team’s announcer, it is more than normal for him to be filled with all types of emotions.

Vin Scully ‘Uncomfortable’ With Attention As 67-Year Career Nears End

Friday is “Vin Scully Appreciation Night” at the stadium, and will call the Dodgers-Colorado Rockies game on “Fan Appreciation” day Sunday afternoon, thus marking the end of the Dodgers’ homestand and his final trip to the Vin Scully Press Box as a Hall of Fame broadcaster.

The 88-year-old legendary announcer said he may need some fans to come to his emotional rescue.

“I think I’ve got them in check, but you never really know,” Scully joked on Monday.

Scully also added, however, that it’s “uncomfortable” and “embarrassing” to have so much attention paid to the end of his broadcasting career.

“I attribute it to one thing and one thing only: God’s grace to allow me to be doing this for 67 years,” Scully said in a conference call with reporters on Monday. “To me, that’s really the story, not really me. I’m just a vessel that was passed hand to hand down through all through those years. I don’t take it to heart as some great compliment. I just realize since I’ve been doing this for 67 years, that’s really why everybody wants to talk about it.

He then continued: “I think I kept it in proper perspective, even thought it is a little embarrassing, to be honest. I’m uncomfortable with it. I never wanted to get out in front of the game. I mean, gee whiz, it’s the Dodgers and Giants tonight. I don’t want people to think, ‘This is Vin’s last whatever.’ I just want them to enjoy the Giants and Dodgers.”

The announcer that although the Dodgers seem ready for a playoff berth, that won’t change his plans to call his last game as L.A. faces the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park on Oct. 2.

“I didn’t want to say goodbye like they do in grand opera,” Scully said. “They say goodbye 25 times in 15 minutes. . . . We will tie the ribbon on the package in San Francisco, and that will be that.”

Scully called all six Dodgers World Series titles, the latter five coming when the franchised moved to Los Angeles before the 1958 season. He said the move from New York was frightening for both himself and then-broadcast partner Jerry Doggett.

Scully’s career went beyond simply calling Dodgers games, nonetheless. Besides broadcasting MLB postseason games nationally for the networks, he also called the Masters and had a stint as an NFL play-by-play voice for CBS.

His final NFL game was the 1981 NFC title game between the Dallas Cowboys and the San Francisco 49ers. Pat Summerall had been tapped to call games along former Oakland Raiders coach John Madden by CBS, a job Scully was also finalist for at the time.

“I remember doing that game known for ‘The Catch’ by Dwight Clark in the end zone,” Scully said. “That game emotionally wore on me and I remember getting on the plane thinking, ‘I hope I didn’t make any mistakes.’ I was done. That was it. That was a great game to call for the final football game of my career. It had served its purpose. It reinvigorated me.”

Dodgers right fielder Yasiel Puig has been notified that if he wears his customized Vin Scully cleats again he will be fined $5,000. Puig first wore the Scully cleats last week against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Cleats say “Win for Vin” with Vin Scully‘s face on the outer left of the shoe.

A tweet below as per Dodgers beat writer Bill Plunkett states the fine.

The legendary LA Dodgers baseball announcer will be retiring at the end of the 2016 baseball season. Scully has been with the team for 67 years, since 1950, and it is the longest any sports broadcaster has been with one professional sports team.

According to Plunkett MLB vice president of standards and on-field operations, Joe Garagiola Jr., told Puig the cleats don’t conform to MLB uniform rules.

Puig has worn other custom designed cleats for U.S. Independence Day and for boxing legend Muhammad Ali, but apparently Scully cleats are a no-go.

According to CBS Sports Puig has some Statue of Liberty cleats in the works he would like to wear when the Dodgers play the Yankees in September. Puig will need to get approval from the league first if he wants to wear them.
