U.S. Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte is no stranger to controversy and not-so-smart decision making, especially following the scandal at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, in which he lied about being robbed when in actuality he had drunkenly vandalized a local gas station. The act caused him to lose sponsorships and resulted in a 10 month ban, and it looks like things are only getting worse following an ill-advised social media post.

Lochte posted a picture of himself receiving a substance from an IV on May 24. After an investigation by the US Anti-Doping Agency, it was deemed that the substance itself, a specific sort of Vitamin-B complex, was legal, but that Lochte had exceeded the legal limit of 100 milliliters. As is the case, the USADA has banned Lochte from competitive swimming for 14 months, stemming from this past May and continuing on to July of 2019.

Lochte issued a statement in which he said, “It’s devastating to my family about this because I definitely made myself a better person after Rio, and I was back in training. I was feeling good. I was swimming fast. My son being born. Everything was happening. Everything was perfect, and then this happened. And it’s devastating. As soon as you get to a certain point or level, in any kind of sport career, you’re always going to have an eye on you. I think I’ve learned it the hard way. Definitely. Especially since Rio. And now this.”

The 12-time Olympic medalist claims to have not been aware of the rule, stating that it was a “newer” one. He’s not entirely wrong, as it was instituted back in 2012, but the ironic part is that the current rule actually upped the allowed amount of the substance from 50 milliliters to 100 milliliters. So even if he weren’t aware of the new rule, the old one would have seen him incur an even more drastic violation.

Lochte said, “It’s a hard sanction because I didn’t take anything illegal, but a rule is a rule. I wasn’t too clear on the rules, but now I am. And I know there’s other athletes that don’t know this rule. I want to help them and make sure that other athletes don’t make the same mistake I did.”

He also promised to change his social media habits, saying “I’m just going to post on my son and my wife, leave everything else out.”

Due to the suspension, Lochte will miss this August’s Pan Pacific Championships, as well as the 2019 World Aquatics Championship. However, he does plan on swimming in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, at which point he will be 36-years-old.

Barely a week after its first contact, the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has contacted the UFC about a second failed test by former heavyweight champion and WWE star Brock Lesnar.

Officials from the UFC were informed Tuesday that, in addition to his failed test June 28, Lesnar was flagged by USADA for the same, unidentified, banned substance in a screening conducted the night he fought Mark Hunt at UFC 200, July 9.

The currently unidentified substance is clomiphene, an anti-estrogen blocker, according to a report from ESPN’s MMA expert Brett Okamoto, citing a source.

Coincidentally, clomiphene is the same substance that was reportedly detected in Jon ‘Bones’ Jones system, forcing UFC President Dana White to pull Jones from his scheduled UFC light heavyweight title bout with Daniel Cormier at UFC 200.

Clomiphene, by itself, does not render performance-enhancing results, but when coupled with a testosterone, it helps prevent synthesis from testosterone to estrogen. It is listed as a banned substance because it is often use in conjunction with another performance-enhancing drug.

Jones vs. Cormier was supposed to be the headliner, but after Jones was pulled, Lesnar vs. Hunt was promoted to co-headline the event.

Lesnar defeated Hunt by unanimous decision at UFC 200, a result that will likely be changed to a no-contest in light of the news of the former Minnesota Viking’s positive tests.

But that isn’t enough for Hunt.

The loser of the July co-main event wants half of Lesnar’s purse for the bout, a figure estimated at around $2.5 million by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Hunt earned just $700,000 for the bout.

“The cheaters get a slap on the wrist and walk off,” Hunt told MMA Fighting. “What penalty or deterrent is there to make them think twice? Nothing. And the (Nevada Athletic Commission), why should these (expletive) get anything? They are not the ones who had to fight with Lesnar or lose. I lost.”

Weeks before the fight, Hunt told Fox Sports Australia that Lesnar looked “juiced to the gills.”

Like Jones, Lesnar will be afforded a full review process, which could include an appeal.

“It is important to note that, under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, there is a full fair legal review process that is afforded to all athletes before any sanctions are imposed,” UFC said in a statement. “The Nevada State Athletic Commission also retains jurisdiction over this matter as the sample collection was performed at UFC 200 in Las Vegas.”

Lesnar has faced vitriol and deeply-biting criticism on social media and throughout the rest of the sports landscape.

Once viewed a hero, Lesnar captured the UFC heavyweight title with a knockout victory over Randy Couture at UFC 91 in 2008. The championship win came in just the fourth MMA bout of his career.

Memes and other social media posts mocking Lesnar have spread all over social media, with most of the blowback centering around comments the WWE star made when asked if he was involved with any PEDs.

“I’m a white boy and I’m jacked,” Lesnar said. “Deal with it.”

After working for 10 years to improve her performance, Gwen Berry’s run at the top didn’t even last a month.

Berry, a 26 year-old who set the U.S. record for the hammer throw May 21 at the Tuscon Elite Classic with a toss covering 250 feet, 4 inches, had her record wiped away Sunday by the United States Anti-Doping Agency.

USADA cited a recent disclosure form, not a positive test result, that Berry submitted ahead of a competition in March as the reason for the imposed sanction.

“Berry, 26, declared the use of an inhaler containing the prohibited substance Vilanterol Trifenatate during an in-competition sample collection,” USADA announced June 13. “After a thorough review of the case, including Berry’s medical records, USADA has accepted her explanation that the Vilanterol Trifenatate, was not being used in an effort to enhance her performance and that she was taking the prescribed medication in a therapeutic dose under the care of a physician.”

The Olympic hopeful will not face any further sanctions beyond the loss of her record, allowing her to compete in the Rio Olympic Games, beginning in early August, should Berry qualify to be a member of the U.S. team.

Berry’s suspension is due to expire one day before Olympic Trials begin in Eugene, Oregon, July 1.
