Cape Verde continued one of the most surprising stories of the 2026 FIFA World Cup by earning a draw against Uruguay, securing another valuable result against one of South America’s traditional football powers.

Entering the match as heavy underdogs, Cape Verde was expected by many observers to struggle against a Uruguayan side featuring significantly more World Cup experience. Instead, the African nation delivered a disciplined and organized performance that frustrated Uruguay throughout the contest and demonstrated why it has become one of the tournament’s biggest surprises.

The result adds another chapter to Cape Verde’s remarkable World Cup journey. With a population of fewer than one million, the country entered the tournament as one of the smallest nations. Despite those limitations, the team has consistently shown resilience and tactical discipline against more established football nations.

For Uruguay, the draw represents a missed opportunity to strengthen its position in the group standings. Expectations remain high for a squad containing experienced international players, and dropping points against a lower-ranked opponent could create additional pressure heading into the final stages of the group phase.

Cape Verde’s performance also highlights the increasing competitiveness of international football. The gap between traditional powers and emerging nations continues to narrow as players gain experience in professional leagues around the world. Results such as this demonstrate that organized and motivated teams can compete with some of the sport’s biggest names.

As the World Cup continues, Cape Verde has already secured one of the tournament’s most memorable underdog stories. Whether the team ultimately advances or not, its performances have earned respect across the football world and inspired smaller nations hoping to compete on the sport’s biggest stage.

Uruguay was the toughest opponent the Unites States have faced in the U-20 FIFA World Cup so far and it showed, as their only two goals let up lead to their quarterfinal loss to send them packing back home. Even though the U.S. team ultimately was not on the same level as Uruguay, it was an impressive streak nonetheless for the Americans, as the only goals let up in their first four matches were in this game.

The U.S. Under-20 Men’s Youth National Team fell short but had one of its best-ever performances and is still the only nation to reach the quarterfinals of the last four tournaments.

The South Americans were dominant, however, despite the Luciano Rodriguez suspension, and got through the American defense twice in this match in Santiago del Estero, Argentina, where this cup is taking place. Uruguay’s Anderson Duarte breached the mighty American defense first to put them ahead 21 minutes in.

Half-time adjustments were made by Unites States head coach Mickey Varas but ultimately, the introduction of Kevin Paredes for Owen Wolff didn’t amount to anything. This then was followed by a defensive effort from Joshua Wynder that accidentally led to their own goal to make it 2-0 56 minutes in.

Not having Paxten Aaronson hurt the American team, as the key attacker and midfielder had his own club commitment in the German Cup for club Eintracht Frankfurt and wasn’t released in time to be eligible for the American roster. But players like Cade Cowell, Elijah Wynder and Daniel Edelman had their moment to shine in the cup, along with a defense that was one of the lone bright spots of this team.

Although it is over, the futures of the members of this squad are far from it. Spots on the Gold Cup for the senior national team will be open and upcoming, along with the 2024 Olympics right around the corner.

Uruguay advances to the semi-finals, as they matchup with Israel on Thursday.

Lionel Messi set the record for career international appearance for Argentina with 148, adding to his already incredible list of honors. Messi earned this title playing in a Copa America game versus Bolivia, surpassing his former Barcelona teammate, Javier Mascherano.

Messi, a native of Rosario, earned his first career appearance in August, 2005 coming in as a substitute versus Hungary and earning a red card within the first minute.

Entering the night, Messi already was Argentina’s leading goal scorer with 73 goals, however he continued to add to the tally. He added two goals in the first half, one of which on a penalty kick, and is now ninth in all-time international goals scored. Messi also tallied an assist to Papu Gómez.

Messi’s new Barcelona teammate, Sergio Aguero, also reached a milestone in this match as he recorded his 100th career appearance.

Coming into the match versus Bolivia, Argentina was in first place in Group A after going unbeaten in their first three matches. The 4-1 victory over Bolivia clinched first place and sends them to a quarterfinal matchup with Ecuador. They will play the winner of UruguayColombia.

Messi has continued to impress throughout this tournament as he scored a brilliant free-kick goal in his first match versus Chile, tallying an impressive 57 career free-kick goals. Messi still has his eyes set on a first major international trophy with Argentina, who have not won a major trophy since the 1993 Copa América.

Uruguay's Luis Suarez Punches Dugout In 1-0 Copa America Loss to Venezuela

A shocking 2-2 result from Uruguay vs. Japan occurred on Thursday night after the Uruguayans will feel lucked out by after two major calls from the video assistant referee tilted in favor for them, where the Japanese should’ve won convincingly. VAR is in the Copa America for the first time and has influenced much of the action so far this tournament.

It all started in the 25th minute where Japan winger Koji Miyoshi gave his team the lead after questionable goalkeeping from the Uruguayan GK Fernando Muslera was beaten at his front post. Japan held the lead for just a few minutes before Uruguyan striker Edinson Cavani went down inside Japan’s box pleading for a penalty. The official originally didn’t give Cavani the call but was asked to go to his video assistant to watch a replay.

https://twitter.com/TelemundoSports/status/1141852010129580033?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1141852010129580033&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fsports.yahoo.com%2Fjapan-draws-uruguay-2-2-010906105.html

The referee went on with the game until three or four minutes after Cavani went down and then went to look at the replay. After the official viewed the incident, only then did he give the penalty. Luis Suarez completed the PK, making it 1-1 in the 32nd minute.

After halftime, Japan felt they should’ve deserved a penalty shortly in the second half after a foul inside the box on Shoya Nakajima of the Asian side. The referee didn’t review the call after VAR didn’t suggest a second look, outraging Japanese fans. Just a few moments later however, in the 59th minute, Miyoshi scored his second of the game after Muserla parried a ball right into the path of Miyoshi who was waiting just outside the six yard box. Two costly mistakes from Muserla gave the Japanese a 2-1 lead with half an hour left to play.

https://twitter.com/TelemundoSports/status/1141864555175403520?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1141864555175403520&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fsports.yahoo.com%2Fjapan-draws-uruguay-2-2-010906105.html

Their lead lasted seven minutes before Uruguayan defender Jose Marie Gimenez  headed home a corner in the 66th minute.

The Uruguayan’s put the Asian side on the ropes through the rest of the game, finishing with 29 total shots compared to Japan’s 12. After the final whistle was blown, the table sets Uruguay on top of Group C with four points until Chile and Venezuela play their second game of the group stage on Friday. Japan sits in third for the time being, with just one point from two games, despite two decent performances so far this tournament.

France and Belgium will face off in the FIFA World Cup semifinals next week after defeating Uruguay and Brazil, respectively in Russia on Friday.

France, Belgium Reach World Cup Semifinals

The two European teams will play on Tuesday at 2pm EST after France beat Uruguay 2-0 in Nizhny Novgorod, and Belgium eliminated five-time tournament champions Brazil with a 2-1 victory in Kazan to inch one step closer to their first-ever World Cup title.

Defenseman Raphael Varane and Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann scored for France, who won their first and only World Cup in 1998, the year they hosted the tournament. Before Friday, Uruguay had only allowed one goal in this World Cup, to Portugal in their previous game. On Friday, Edinson Cavani — who scored both goals against Portugal — sat out for Uruguay.

Varane put Les Bleus up 1-0 in the 40th minute with a header on a free kick from Griezmann that Uruguay goalie Fernando Muslera simply couldn’t stop. Griezmann doubled the lead in the 61st minute with a powerful far strike that Muslera initially blocked with his hands, although he couldn’t hold onto the ball and it soared above his head and into the net.

Griezmann was elated with the win but was classy in celebrating his victory. He shook hands with and hugged several Uruguayans, two of which are his club teammates in Madrid: Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez.

French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris also delivered a great game by making some spectacular saves, including one on a low header from Martín Cáceres near the end of the first half, just minutes after Varane’s goal.

France forward Kylian Mbappé, the 19-year-old Paris St-Germain attacker who is proving to be his national team’s rising star, was not as effective this game as the last, during which he scored two goals against Argentina. In fact, Mbappé drew a yellow card in the 68th minute after the referee accused him of exaggerating an injury from a tackle made by Uruguay’s Cristian Rodriguez. The replay clearly showed Mbappé did not react immediately to being hit, as there was a delay of about two seconds between when Rodriguez made the tackle and Mbappé fell to the ground, yelping and rolling in pain just as Neymar did in the Brazil-Mexico game. Rodriguez also received a yellow card for the incident.

Later on Friday, Belgium beat Brazil 2-1 after scoring twice in the first half. Embarrassingly enough, Belgium’s first goal was an early own goal from Brazil. In the 13th minute, Belgium took a corner kick and Brazilian defender Fernandinho leaped and accidentally knocked the ball into his own goal with his arm.

Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne made it 2-0 with a well-placed long, low shot in the 31st minute. Brazilian substitute Renato Augusto created suspense in the 76th minute to score on a header and make it 2-1, but the South American squad ended up going home, four years after they were knocked out of the World Cup by a humiliating 7-1 semifinal loss to eventual champions Germany. Belgian goalie Thibaut Courtois made several key saves for his team, including a late one on a shot from Neymar.

The second World Cup semifinal will be defined on Saturday evening, after Sweden and England face off before Croatia and Russia play each other.

Romelu Lukaku, Belgium beat Panama 3-0 in World Cup 2018

Two of the four 2018 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals will be held in Russia on Friday, and here is what you need to know.

World Cup Quarterfinals Preview

First, France and Uruguay will face off at 10am EST. France won its group (while Denmark finished second), but was not as impressive as expected in the first round. However, Les Bleus put on a stellar performance in defeating Argentina 4-3 in their last (round of 16) game, led by two goals from 19-year-old rising star Kylian Mbappé, who has now scored three times in the tournament.

Uruguay was just one of three teams in the tournament to win all three of its first-round games. The squad then defeated Portugal 2-1 in the round of 16 behind two goals from “El Matador” Edinson Cavani, who limped off the field in the second half after becoming injured. He is thus questionable for Friday’s quarterfinal.

Uruguay have only allowed one goal this World Cup, to Portugal’s Pepe on Saturday. Uruguay has won two World Cups (1930, 1950), while France has won once (1998).

Both teams will surely pose a major threat to each other, as they both eliminated squads led by two of the world’s top soccer superstars: Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. France also has a nine-game undefeated run against South American teams in the World Cup, so there is that to consider as well. However, this World Cup has been full of firsts and surprises, so we will have to wait and see.

At 2pm EST on Friday, Brazil and Beligum — two of the top-ranked teams in the World Cup — will face off. Belgium has scored 12 goals thus far in the tournament, the most of any team. They have also demonstrated they can score very different kinds of goals, both long, powerful strikes and headers. The Red Devils also won all three of their group-stage games, and count top players like Romelu Lukaku, Eden Hazard and Kevin De Bruyne.

Regarding Brazil, most of the attention will again be on NeymarThe star Paris St-Germain forward drew severe criticism for exaggerating his injuries and wasting time in his team’s 2-0 victory over Mexico on Monday, despite finishing with a goal and an assist. Brazilian defenseman Casemiro is also suspended from the game against Belgium after drawing two total yellow cards. Brazil have won a record five World Cups, while Belgium has never won the tournament.

First-round group play in the 2018 FIFA World Cup is finally over, and the second round will start on Saturday in Russia.

FIFA World Cup Round Of 16 weekend Preview

Germany’s fans are still in shock from the defending champions being eliminated by South Korea on Wednesday, the first time ever in the national team’s history. Of the 32 teams that qualified for the World Cup, 16 are still in.

This weekend, four games will be played: two on Saturday and two on Sunday. All games will air on Fox Sports and Telemundo (English and Spanish broadcasts, respectively).

SLIDESHOW: 30 Best Sports Instagrams!

First on Saturday, Argentina and France will face off at 10am EST. Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, barely made it to the round of 16 after finishing second in its group with four points. (Croatia led that group with nine points). France finished at the top of its group with seven points, but also struggled in its first three games. The French, who won the 1998 World Cup, tied Denmark 0-0 in their last game, while Argentina — who lost to Germany in the 2014 World Cup final — beat Nigeria 2-1.

At 2pm EST, Uruguay and Portugal will play each other. Led by superstars like Luis Suarez, Uruguay won all three of its group-stage games to reach the round 16, and could pose a severe threat to Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal, which only defeated Morocco in the first round.

On Sunday at 10am, Spain and Russia will face off. Spain’s offense has not been as strong as in other tournaments, but the 2010 World Cup champions are still highly projected to defeat Russia in this round, despite the latter country’s home advantage.

At 2pm, Denmark and Croatia will play. Croatia’s Luka Modric has been particularly impressive, and the team that thrashed Argentina 3-0 in the opening round will surly do fine against the Danes.

The other eight countries who will compete in the round of 16 are Brazil, Mexico, Belgium, Japan, Sweden, Switzerland, England and Colombia. Those national teams will next play on Monday or Tuesday.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup officially starts Thursday in Russia, with the host country facing Saudi Arabia for the opening game.

FIFA World Cup 2018 Day 2 Preview

On Friday, three big games will be held in Russia, and here is what you need to know.

First, Uruguay and Egypt will play at 8am EST in Yekaterinburg. Egypt’s big star is Mo Salah, a forward who plays for Liverpool FC. However, Uruguay is the favorite to win this matchup, as it counts major stars like Luis Suareza Barcelona striker, and Atletico Madrid standouts Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez.  Uruguay is unbeaten in four of its last five games. Russia and Saudi Arabia are group-mates with Egypt and Uruguay.

This matchup will air on Fox Sports 1.

Iran and Morocco will face off at 11am EST on Friday in St. Petersburg for the second matchup of the day. These two national teams will face a tough challenge in hoping to take the top two spots and advance to the second round, as they were paired with two European powerhouses in their group: Spain and Portugal.

Morocco is back in the World Cup for the first time since 1998. The African country is on an 18-game undefeated streak and have had a few big wins recently, including a 2-0 victory over Serbia.

This is the fourth of the last six World Cups that Iran has qualified for. The Middle Eastern team has also secured several victories under former Manchester United coach Carlos Queiroz, who has been with the team for more than seven years. Iran has only lost twice in the last 16 games. They tied Russia recently and beat Montenegro and Algeria.

Most reports predict that Morocco is the favorite to win this game, as that team counts a stronger roster of players who have competed in top European clubs. This game will air on Fox.

SLIDESHOW: 10 Highest-Paid Athletes

Spain and Portugal will close out Friday’s games. The two nations will play at 2pm EST in Sochi.

Spain just fired its head coach, Basque native Julen Lopetegui, on Wednesday, a development that will surely put the 2010 World Cup champions in a tough spot. Lopetegui is next set to coach Real Madrid while Fernando Hierro, the Spanish national team’s sporting director, will reportedly take over as Spain’s coach for the tournament.

Portugal are the reigning European cup champions after defeating France in 2016. Recently, they have only lost to the Netherlands.

Spain, meanwhile, is undefeated since it was eliminated by Italy in the Euro 2016 tournament. Spain recently crushed Argentina 6-1.

In the last meeting between Spain and Portugal, in 2012, the former team won on penalties after a 0-0 tie. There are mixed predictions as to who could win this time around, although some polls have Spain winning.

This game will also air on Fox.

Spanish-language channels Telemundo and NBC Universo are also scheduled to air all games.

FIFA Announces Expansion to 48 Countries for 2026 World Cup

Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay are hoping to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

2030 FIFA World Cup hosting bid

The three South American countries announced their joint bid at the presidential palace in Buenos Aires on Wednesday. Argentina and Uruguay first planned a joint bid, and then Paraguay joined.

Bidding for that tournament — which will mark the 100th anniversary of the global soccer event — is not set to officially begin for at least another four years.

Uruguay hosted the inaugural World Cup in 1930.

“Today we are here to ratify this commitment,” Argentinian president Mauricio Macri said. “We have spoken to the president of FIFA and we will have the support of [South American Football Confederation] CONMEBOL, which believes South America deserves the possibility of hosting this World Cup because of the significance of the 100 year anniversary of the first edition in Uruguay.”

Uruguay president Tabare Vazquez and Paraguay president Horacio Cartes seconded Macri’s comments.

“I think the argument of the 100-year anniversary of the first World Cup held in Uruguay makes it very attractive for the region to organize the tournament,” said Cartes.

Russia is set to host the 2018 World Cup, while Qatar will host the 2022 event. The United States, Mexico and Canada are seeking to make a joint bid for the 2026 tournament, which will be the first World Cup in which 48 countries will participate, instead of 32. FIFA president Gianni Infantino established this new rule in January.

Qatar’s 2022 hosting bid is said to be in danger due to reports of worker exploitation in the extremely hot Middle Eastern country.

2018 World Cup Qualifiers: Brazil beat Uruguay 4-1, Argentina beat Chile 1-0

Brazil defeated Uruguay 4-1 thanks to a hat-trick from former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Paulinho in a 2018 Russia World Cup qualifying game in Montevideo on Thursday.

Neymar also scored for Brazil, which recovered from allowing an early penalty from Uruguay’s Edinson Cavani.

With the victory, Brazil extended their lead in the South American qualifying group to seven points. It also marked coach Tite’s seventh consecutive qualifying win since taking over from Dunga in September. The five-time FIFA World Cup champions could qualify for Russia on Tuesday by beating Paraguay, should Ecuador and Chile both fail to win.

Cavani’s goal came just seven minutes after kick-off when a mistake from Brazil defender Marcelo led goalkeeper Alisson to foul the Uruguayan forward. Cavani, a Paris Saint-Germain star, scored the penalty to record his ninth goal in South American qualifiers, more than any other player. Uruguay entered Thursday’s game having won all six of their previous home qualifiers.

Ten minutes afterwards, Paulinho — who is now playing for Chinese club Guangzhou Evergrande — tied it with a shot from the edge of the penalty area, sinking the ball into goalie Martin Silva’s left corner. The game remained tied 1-1 at halftime, but Paulinho then scored seven minutes after the break.

Uruguay began launching stronger attacks to attempt to equalize, but Brazil’s defense proved too robust for the hosts. After 74 minutes of play, defender Miranda cleared from his box, Neymar beat Uruguay’s Sebastián Coates to the ball and lobbed a shot over Silva to make it 3-1.

Paulinho earned his hat-trick in stoppage time in quite an unconventional way: by pushing the ball into the goal with his chest following a Dani Alves cross.

“Not in my wildest dreams I expected something like this,” Paulinho said afterwards.

Tite admitted the game exceeded his expectations.

“I was happy about the 90 minutes,” the coach said. “Our capacity to absorb a goal against us and keep playing was based on one idea. Our team is very self-aware. We did more than controlling the match, we were dominant.”

Uruguay was missing Barcelona forward Luis Suarez, who is suspended, while Brazil played without Manchester City’s teenage forward Gabriel Jesus, who sat out with a broken toe. Brazil’s Alves will be out for Tuesday’s game against Paraguay in São Paulo, while Uruguay will travel to play Peru.

Meanwhile, Argentina beat Chile 1-0 in Buenos Aires on Thursday thanks to a 16th-minute penalty from Lionel Messi.

With the victory, the Albiceleste is now in third place in the South American qualifying table, while Chile fell to sixth. Chile defeated Argentina in the US-hosted 2016 Copa America Centenario last summer, after which Messi initially announced he would retire from international soccer.

Just a few months ago, following their previous World Cup Qualifying game, Messi announced he and his Argentina teammates were launching a boycott against the press for the way the media has recently criticized them.

However, Argentina coach Edgardo Bauza is relieved his team managed to win the game, which he viewed as a challenging matchup.

“This was very difficult. It was like a knockout stage match.”

His Chilean counterpart, Juan Antonio Pizzi, disagreed. “I consider it totally unfair that we lost,” he said. “We managed to control the virtues of the Argentinians, and they are many. We deserved to get one goal.”

Fourth-place Colombia also won their latest match 1-0 against Bolivia thanks to a penalty, with Real Madrid’s James Rodriguez converting the kick.

Lille defender Júnior Alonso scored the winner for Paraguay as they beat fifth-placed Ecuador 2-1, while Venezuela drew 2-2 at home to Peru. Venezuela led 2-0 at half-time, but goals from André Carrillo and Paolo Guerrero earned Peru a point.

In the next round of qualifiers, Argentina will visit Bolivia, where they have not won since 2005. Chile will host Venezuela, while Colombia visit Ecuador for a key qualifier.

Messi to Retire After Argentina's Copa America Final Loss to Chile

Lionel Messi gave Argentina fans yet another reason to be relieved he was not yet retiring by scoring to lead his national team to a 1-0 victory over Uruguay in Thursday night’s 2018 Russia World Cup qualifying match in Mendoza, Argentina.

Lionel Messi Scores Goal To Lead Argentina To 1-0 Win Over Uruguay

Messi and the “Albiceleste” are now at the top of the South American qualifying group for the 2018 World Cup. The game marked Messi’s first match in an Argentina jersey since his national team lost the Copa America Centenario 2016 final to Chile in a penalty shootout in June, after which the superstar declared he would retire from international play due to his frustration with having lost four finals with Argentina.

The Barcelona star forward broke the deadlock with an incredible goal in the 43rd minute. Surrounded by defenders, Messi deftly controlled the ball, even flicking it with his heel at one point, and fired a low shot from just outside the box that deflected off Jose Maria Gimenez and wrong-footed goalkeeper Fernando Muslera to reach the back of the net. The crowd roared as Messi’s teammates hugged him.

The goal bumped the 29-year-old Ballon D’Or winner’s as Argentina’s top scorer to 56 in his 114th international appearance. The score also proved to be the perfect insurance for Argentina, who were forced to play with 10 men after Paulo Dybala was sent off just before half-time after a tackle on Mathia Corujo that left the Uruguay defender on the ground for several moments.

Messi and the rest of the Argentine squad desperately attempted to lobby for Dybala, a 22-year-old Juventus forward, by arguing with the referee, but the official showed no mercy and issued Dybala a red card as the youngster left the field in tears, covering his face with his jersey.

Uruguay, meanwhile, hardly seemed to trouble Argentina goalie Sergio Romero at all, even in the second half.

With the Albiceleste holding onto the 1-0 lead late in the game, some fans just clearly couldn’t stop themselves from showing Messi some love. One fan ran onto the field and hugged the Barcelona man, after which security quickly dragged the spectator off.

This isn’t the first time Messi has received love from overeager fans who have been punished for it. One man recently jumped down from the stands into the players’ tunnel after a Barcelona game and also surprised the Argentine by hugging him, although he was tackled more violently than Thursday’s fan.

“I wanted to be here after all the confusion I’d caused by first saying I wasn’t coming and then that I was,” Messi told reporters regarding his recent announcement that he would retire from the Argentina national team. “From the moment I said that, the fans showed me a lot of affection and I’m really grateful, I couldn’t not come back.”

Argentina now lead the 10-country group with 14 points from seven games, one point more than Uruguay, Colombia and Ecuador in the four qualification spots.

Uruguay's Luis Suarez Punches Dugout In 1-0 Copa America Loss to Venezuela

Uruguay was eliminated from the Copa America Centenario following their 1-0 loss against Venezuela at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Thursday night, although this was not the only embarrassment suffered by the 15-time champions.

Luis Suarez Punches Dugout After Not Playing In 1-0 Loss To Venezuela

Forward Luis Suarez, who missed Uruguay’s first game of the competition– a 3-1 defeat to Mexico– due to injury, was told by coach Oscar Tabarez he would not be playing on Thursday either, which led Suarez to lose his temper, throw one of his cleats onto the field, and punch the dugout in frustration.

Suarez, 29, had been warming up on the sidelines in the second half despite not being named as a starter or substitute.

“There is no situation. The situation is what I told you [on Wednesday]. The player is not ready to play,” said a defiant Tabarez of the Barcelona forward. “This is an issue about numbers and doctors. Even if the player is upset, I’m not going to play a player who is not 100 per cent. If he got upset, that is something I was not aware of. He didn’t tell me anything.”

Suarez injured his hamstring in Barcelona’s Copa del Rey final victory over Sevilla in May.

Salomon Rondon, a striker for West Bromwich Albion scored the lone goal for Venezuela in the 36th minute after a shot from midfield by Alejandro Guerra was barely deflected by Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera and hit the crossbar.

Venezuela and Mexico will now be the two teams of Group C who advance to the quarterfinals after both securing two wins in the first round. Mexico defeated Jamaica 2-0 in Pasadena, California on Thursday. Jamaica also lost to Venezuela 1-0 on Sunday.

Mexico’s victory was their 10th in succession since Juan Carlos Osorio took over as coach last year, with Bayer Leverkusen forward Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez heading the opening goal.

Mexico and Venezuela will face off in Houston, Texas on Monday night.
